FOOT LOCKER
What a fun, rewarding trip!! It was great to have so many of you along to watch and compete against the top runners from the 12 western states. Hopefully it will give you the experience and motivation to continue to train hard and set some more lofty goals for yourself and the TEAM.
We’ll get to the running results later. Of course there were many other highlights of the trip besides the races. They include:
30+-hours on the bus- it was great to watch you interact and get to know and relate to each other;
The beach- it always brings out the child in everyone;
Las Vegas- we were a long ways from Syracuse, probably measured in light years, not miles;
The biggest highlight of the trip for the coaches was being part of a group of outstanding young people that did everything asked of them to make the trip a success. THANKS to all athletes and to Coach Wilcox and Mr. Hansen for their help in making the trip a huge success.
Now to the race results. Sharlie Dimick continues to amaze. She finished 3rd in the All-West Freshman/Sophomore race and was the 7th fastest Utahn from all races combined. She ran 19:44 over the very hilly, challenging 5000 meter course. That is the fastest time ever run by a Lady Titan. Jaxon Hansen ran very well to place 17th in the Junior race running 17:29, the #3 all-time Titan time. Preston Williams finished just out of the medals running 17:50 in the Senior race. Coach Wilcox carried the Titan colors with pride running 20:27 in the coaches race. What a stud!!
In other results, there was a common thread: EVERYONE ran hard and competed to the finish. There was no running in “tutu’s”, wigs, Batman getups, etc. We really weren’t concerned about times, just efforts. And the efforts were impressive. The results from the grade races were as follows:
Freshman/Sophomore Girls- Mallory Ashby (26:53), Jordan Anderson (32:44- great job in first distance race ever), Dolly Johanson (24:48), Erin Kibler (28:38), and Paige Ryder (26:21- not broken anymore).
Junior Girls- Cheyna Field (23:45).
Senior Girls- Daylyn Johnston (23:44), Lindsey McFarland (22:41).
Freshman/Sophomore Boys- Tom Lakey (25:01), Tom Hill (19:27), Colten Redford (24:17).
Junior Boys- Spencer Griffin (19:09), Zack Watson (20:43- fastest pole vaulter), Brandon Yardley (18:07), Mike Russell (19:03).
Senior Boys- Weston Atkins (19:14- fastest cross-trainer), Andrew Skidmore (18:47).

INDOOR TRACK
Try to meet everyday after school in the Fitness Center for your workout. Coach Wilcox will be there to get you going. The key thing for distance during Indoor is MILEAGE!!

Even though the article is about the top three distance runners in the U.S., runners of all levels can apply the same thought processes to reach their goals.

Titan XC Update - October 24, 2010
STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Illnesses, injuries, etc., played a part in the TEAM outcome at the State Championships held at Sugarhouse Park Wednesday. Both Boys and Girls finished 12th in the standings. Many of the 14 Titans that competed at State felt a little disappointed in the results, but overall, the efforts were outstanding, though the results were somewhat hampered by the illnesses and injuries.
The most outstanding performance of the meet was Sharlie Dimick finishing 5th to earn First Team All-State honors. Her time of 19:19 was the fastest ever run by a Lady Titan, just nipping Hannah Williams’ 2009 time for the honor. Sharlie joins Hannah and Austin Costley as the only Titans to earn First Team honors. Lindsey McFarland’s 20:56 placed her in 44th. Mikelann Wilcox turned in her best performance of the year to place 72nd in 22:09. Cheyna Field’s 22 57 was good enough to finish 88th. An “under-the-weather” Daylyn Johnston ran 23:03 to place 93rd. Dolly Johanson and Erin Kibler ran very tough to gain some great experience for next year.
The Boys experienced similar problems, but still put in 100% efforts. A sick Jaxon Hansen ran 16:56 to place 36th. Preston Williams was right behind running 16:57. Brandon Yardley’s 17:15 was good enough for 50th place. Frank Owens (79th, 17:47) and Spencer Griffin (93rd, 18:13) rounded out the scoring. Tom Hill and Dylan Rossmango ran well to complete the State TEAM performers.
Of the 14 competing at State, three were seniors and they will be sorely missed in 2011. The efforts and leadership from all of the seniors was great this year. For those returning, it’s up to you to see how far you can take this program next year. The time to start preparing for 2011 is now!!

Hopefully we will be able to make a definite decision by the end of this next week about the Foot Locker trip. It looks like we may have enough from other schools to be able to get a bus.
WORKOUTS
It is important to keep up the mileage in preparation for indoor, outdoor and next year’s cross country. Meet each day in the Fitness Center long enough to hook up with a training partner or two for the workout. I will hand out the Foot Locker workouts Monday. It is important that you continue training even if you aren’t planning on going to FL.

Titan XC Update - October 17, 2010
OFF TO STATE!!!!
It was a great day for the Titans at the Region One Cross Country Championships. In an extremely competitive region, both Boys and Girls qualified for the State Championships. There were many great performances that highlighted the meet and typified the season. The weather cooperated as we had clear skies and perfect conditions for the race run over the 3.0 mile course at Layton Commons Park.
In the Girls JV race, Mallory Ashby and Kayla Byrum overcame injuries and illnesses to run their best races of the year. This got us off to a great start.
In Boys JV, the Titans finished 3rd in the TEAM race. Dylan Rossmango (13th, 17:39), Andrew Skidmore (15th, 17:55), Mike Russell (16th, 17:57), Parker Williams (17th, 18:03) and Cody Kelley (33rd, 19:12) all ran great to pace the TEAM finish.
The Girls Varsity race provided some tense moments as officials added and re-added the scores. Four schools were within three points for the final three state qualifying spots. When the verdict came in, the Lady Titans had secured the #4 place ensuring their place on the starting line at State. The final scores were: Davis (24), Viewmont (66), Fremont (108), Syracuse (109), Roy (109) and Weber (110). Had one of the top six Varsity Lady Titans faltered even one place, we would not have made it to State. I’ve never seen an outcome anywhere near as close. We came out on top of many close finishes because of some great efforts by some tough ladies that refused to lose. Sharlie Dimick had an incredible race to finish 2nd in 18:42. In the 14-year history of races on this course, this was the #14 time ever run and would have won most years. Lindsey McFarland moved up from 25th to 15th over the last mile to help the cause immensely. Daylyn Johnston ran her usual strong race to finish 27th in 21:19. Courtney Hamilton also had a great race to place 29th in 21:31. Dolly Johanson passed several runners over the last 500 meters to finish 36th running 21:47. Cheyna Field’s 22:20 was the place that earned us the tiebreaker and a trip to State. GREAT JOB!!! And Erin Kibler stepped up at the last minute to run varsity and her 23:11 was her top performance of the year. Even though it can’t be proven, I think the deciding factor in the Girls making it to State was Taylee Hamblin’s presence. The Lady Titans dedicated this race to her and received some extra energy from her to get the TEAM to State. Thanks, Taylee!!
While the Boys finish was not quite as dramatic, it also took some top efforts to get us to State. The final scores for State qualifying teams was as follows: Davis (19), Weber (76), Syracuse (103), Viewmont (103), Clearfield (123). Preston Williams really stepped up and finished 8th in 16:06. Jaxon Hansen struggled, but gutted it out in the end to place 17th in 16:29. His best race is coming up. Jeff Michel (21st, 16:46) and Brandon Yardley (22nd, 16:47) finished strong to help the cause. Tom Hill (35th, 17:31), Spencer Griffin (36th, 17:32), and Frank Owens (38th, 17:35) ran great to put us into 3rd as a TEAM. Weston Atkins showed what a stud he is by running his first race in several weeks to try to help the TEAM. Even though he didn’t impact the scores, his efforts inspired the other Titans and helped us get to State.
Bottom line is both TEAMS are on the way to State. While there were some individual “ups and downs”, the TEAMS got it done. Now for the next step.

Jake Rossmango ran 33:24 for a 10k at the Arkansas U. Invitational. He was 241st out of 463 runners representing some very strong college teams. TCU placed 18th out of 50. Haley Busby ran another very good 5k turning in a time of 20:46 at the the MSU-Billings Invitational. And Jared Ward, our adopted Titan, helped lead BYU to a 2nd place finish at the Pre-Nationals in Indiana. He ran 24:28 over the 8k course placing 42nd out of over 250 collegiate runners.

DAVIS/CLEARFIELD/VIEWMONT MEET
It was a great day for a Cross Country meet: if you like rain, wind and mud. It was a good meet to test how tough some runners could be. Most passed the test very well. The Syracuse 3.0 mile home course proved to be more challenging than usual because of the weather. The meet was a good tuneup for Region.
Davis Girls, ranked #23 in the nation, easily won the team title with 20 points. The Lady Titans finished 2nd with 62 points followed by Viewmont (71) and Clearfield (81). Individually, Sharlie Dimick ran very well finishing 3rd in 20:02. Lindsey McFarland (11th, 21:10) and Daylyn Johnston (13th, 22:24) continued their consistent running. Courtney Hamilton sacrificed the first half of her soccer game to place 15th in 23:05. Cheyna Field was our fifth scorer placing 19th in 23:42. Dolly Johanson (23rd, 23:57) and Erin Kibler (26th, 24:13) completed the top seven. Dolly continues to improve and it was good to see Erin have a super race following some tough injuries. Kayla Byrum also ran well for the Lady Titans.
Davis Boys, ranked #5 in the nation, also easily won the team title with a perfect score of 15. Syracuse was 2nd with 57 followed by Clearfield (79) and Viewmont (84). Jaxon Hansen (6th, 16:51) and Preston Williams (7th, 16:59) ran very strong races to pace the Titans. It was good to see Preston returning to his “old self”- just in time for Region. Brandon Yardley (11th, 17:13) and Jeff Michel (12th, 17:34) ran well. Spencer Griffin (21st, 18:32) Tom Hill (23rd, 18:37) and Frank Owens (24th, 18:39) completed the top seven for the Titans. Mike Russell, running his first race of the year, ran great to finish in 18:51.

In the Girls race, it should be a six-way battle for the remaining four spots between Weber, Viewmont, Clearfield, Roy, Fremont and the Lady Titans. Everyone will have to step it up a little to overcome the loss of Taylee Hamblin.
The Boys TEAM race will also be a battle for 2nd and the remaining State slots. The Titans should be in the hunt with Weber, Fremont, Viewmont, Northridge and Clearfield for the State spots. Second place would be a great accomplishment- but a tough one.
Wednesday should be an exciting day. The race schedule is as follows:

Hannah Williams had her best performance of the year at Idaho State Saturday. She ran 16:18 over a 4k course to place 9th overall and #3 for USU. McKayla Williams also ran well as the Aggie’s #7 finisher running 17:07. They were the only Titan alums in action this week.

LAYTON/FREMONT/WEBER/VIEWMONT MEET
The Lady Titans finished third while the Boys captured first in the five-way meet held at Weber High. The races were run over the hilly, tough, 3.1 mile course in 90 degree weather. There were some very good performances in spite of the conditions.
In the girls team action, Fremont finished first with 33 points. Weber was second with 40 while Syracuse had 50. Viewmont and Layton were far behind. Sharlie Dimick took the lead about a mile into the race and never looked back. Her winning time was 20:16. Lindsey McFarland (9th, 22:18), Daylyn Johnston (11th, 23:11), Mikelann Wilcox (14th, 23:52) and Cheyna Field (15th, 23:53) ran strong races over the tough course. Dolly Johanson (20th, 25:04) and Kayla Bryrum (24th, 26:19) completed the top seven.
The Boys won the meet with 30 points. Weber was right behind with 35 and Fremont had 65. Layton and Viewmont trailed the field. Jaxon Hansen continued to run great as he finished 2nd in 17:10. Brandon Yardley was close behind in 3rd running 17:33. Preston Williams (5th, 17:52), Jeff Michel (7th, 18:03) and Frank Owens (13th, 18:22) secured the win. Tom Hill (15th, 18:30) and Spencer Griffin (20th, 19:03) rounded out the varsity squad.
Overall, it was a good meet. With just a couple weeks left in the season, it’s good to see some of the newer Titans have learned to race and compete.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Selected as the Athletes of the Week for the Girls were Kayla Byrum and Erin Kibler. Both have been battling injuries most of the season and have continued to work hard without missing any practices. Selected for the Boys were Thomas Lakey and Cody Kelley. They have both worked very hard without missing a practice, including the summer workouts.
REGION OPEN MEET AT SYRACUSE
Our meet this Wednesday is at Syracuse. Viewmont, Davis and Clearfield will be here. The Girls will run at 3:45, Boys at 4:15.
SATURDAY WORKOUT
We will workout Saturday morning at Layton Park. The time will probably be 8:00 or 9:00 am- we’ll decide later in the week.

Preston Williams and Josh Flores were selected to the Academic All-Region Team. In addition, Preston was also selected to the Academic All-State Team. Great accomplishments for both Titans. With Preston’s 4.0 and 32 ACT, it’s easy to see how he made the teams. Josh was not far behind.

Coach Wilcox reached his goal at the St. George Marathon running the course in 3:24. This qualifies him for Boston. Wendy Dimick also ran a great race covering the 26.2 miles in 3:47. Way to represent the Titans!!!

NORTHRIDGE/ROY/WEBER/VIEWMONT MEET
The Lady Titans ran very well at the five-way meet held Wednesday at Syracuse. Viewmont easily won with 33 points. Weber followed with 50, we had 65, Roy 68 and Northridge did not have a full team. The results would have n somewhat different if we would have had Taylee Hamblin. She is out with an injury- we hope to have her back by Region.
Sharlie Dimick ran a strong race to capture the individual title. Her time was 19:55 over the very challenging 3-mile course. Lindsey McFarland was 10th in 21:44. Courtney Hamilton ran her first race finishing 16th in 23:06. Daylyn Johnston (18th, 23:13), and Cheyna Field (20th, 23:36) rounded out the scoring. Mikelann Wilcox (23rd, 23:48) and Dolly Johanson (27th, 24:57) completed our top seven.
The Titans captured the boys title with 45 points. Weber (56), Viewmont (59), Northridge (91) and Roy (123) were the other schools competing. Individually, Jaxon Hansen ran an aggressive race to finish 2nd in 16:47. Brandon Yardley (7th, 17:19), Jeff Michel (9th, 17:20) and Preston Williams (10th, 17:27) were grouped right behind Jaxon. Dylan Rossmango (17th, 18:02), Tom Hill (18th, 18:07), and Frank Owens (19th, 18:08) formed another strong pack to help secure the win.
WAHSATCH RENDEZVOUS
The Titans ran very well at this large invitational. With nearly 20 schools competing, the girls finished 8th and the boys 7th.
Sharlie Dimick continued to run great finishing 2nd overall in 19:14 over the challenging 3.0 mile course. The girl who beat her is the defending 3A State champion. Lindsey McFarland (21:17), Daylyn Johnston (22:11), Mikelann Wilcox (22:54) and Cheyna Field (23:54) ran strong races. Because of injuries, we had to juggle the varsity lineup quite a bit. Erin Kirby and Dolly Johanson stepped up and ran very well to help the TEAM.
Jaxon Hansen showed he is ready to run with the top kids in the state. He finished 2nd in the #1 race and had the third fastest time of the day running 16:14. Brandon Yardley (16:59), Preston Williams (17:08), Dylan Rossmango (17:55), Tom Hill (17:58), Frank Owens (18:14) and Spencer Griffin (18:19) ran well to help the cause. Parker Williams ran his best race of the year and finished as our top JV runner finishing in 18:37.

DAVIS DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS
For the third straight year, the Titans finished second to Davis in both Girls and Boys varsity races at the Davis District Championships held at Layton City Park. This was the 23rd year the meet has been held, and several Titans raced their way onto the All-Time list of top performances over the 2.75 mile course.
Sharlie Dimick again led the Lady Titans as she finished 3rd overall with a time of 17:39. That is just 7-seconds off the time posted last year by Hannah Williams. Not bad company. Taylee Hamblin ran 49 seconds faster than last year placing 7th in 18:00. That is the #3 time ever by a Lady Titan. Lindsey McFarland was 27 seconds faster than 2009 placing 16th in 19:01. Daylyn Johnston had a huge improvement of 1:39 to place 19th in 19:52. Cheyna Field continued her rapid improvement running 20:44 to finish in 25th place. Mikelann Wilcox (20:59) and Dolly Johansen (21:25) rounded out our top seven. It was good to have Mikelann running again even though it was with a great deal of pain. Dolly keeps improving each week and will be joining our top runners soon. Kayla Byrum, Erin Kibler and Mallory Ashby ran gutsy races as they were all hampered by illness and injuries.
Davis won the Girls teamp title with 18 points. The Lady Titans finished with 70 to place ahead of Bountiful (83), Viewmont (91), Woods Cross (116), and Clearfield (153).
For the third week in a row, the Boys had a different #1 finisher. Jaxon Hansen ran a strong race to place 8th overall 14:47. That was :59 faster than last year and the #2 mark ever by a Titan athlete. Preston Williams ran 16 seconds faster than last year finishing 14th in 15:18. Jeff Michel continues to improve rapidly running 15:22 to place 18th. Brandon Yardley’s 15:36 was 14 seconds faster than 2009 and good enough for 19th. Frank Owens and Dylan Rossmango had incredible 2:00 improvements to place 23rd and 27th in 15:46 and 15:56. Tom Hill continued the trend as he ran 1:36 faster to finish 30th. In JV action, Andrew Skidmore ruined Davis’ perfect score as he placed 8th in 16:10. Spencer Griffin (17:03), Parker Williams (17:20, 1:55 faster than last year), Cody Kelley (17:33) and Tyler Weaver (18:14) rounded out the scoring. Colby Johnson (18:18), Brady Cook (18:50), Joshua Lee (19:36), Colton Redford (20:28), Josh Flores (21:17), Tom Lakey (22:17) and Nate Lutz (24:09) continue to work hard and improve.
Davis won the Boys team title with 17 points. The Titans had 82 to edge out Viewmont (86) and Bountiful (88). Woods Cross (116), Northridge (151), Clearfield (192) and Layton (212) completed the scoring teams.

Hannah (18:43) and McKayla Williams (19:27) and Haley Busby (21:42) all ran well at the Montana State Invitational. The course was a tough 3.0 miles in length. Jake Rossmango didn’t race this week and I think Austin Costley is red-shirting because of IT Band problems. Jared Ward, though not an alumni, but definitely a “friend of the program”, ran great at the Riverside Invitational in California. He finished 6th out of over 300 runners covering the 8k course in 24:18. That’s a 4:50 mile pace. And, for those who didn’t already know, he and Erica Christensen (who helped us in Track last year) are engaged to be married in October.

DAVIS DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS
For the third straight year, the Titans finished second to Davis in both Girls and Boys varsity races at the Davis District Championships held at Layton City Park. This was the 23rd year the meet has been held, and several Titans raced their way onto the All-Time list of top performances over the 2.75 mile course.
Sharlie Dimick again led the Lady Titans as she finished 3rd overall with a time of 17:39. That is just 7-seconds off the time posted last year by Hannah Williams. Not bad company. Taylee Hamblin ran 49 seconds faster than last year placing 7th in 18:00. That is the #3 time ever by a Lady Titan. Lindsey McFarland was 27 seconds faster than 2009 placing 16th in 19:01. Daylyn Johnston had a huge improvement of 1:39 to place 19th in 19:52. Cheyna Field continued her rapid improvement running 20:44 to finish in 25th place. Mikelann Wilcox (20:59) and Dolly Johansen (21:25) rounded out our top seven. It was good to have Mikelann running again even though it was with a great deal of pain. Dolly keeps improving each week and will be joining our top runners soon. Kayla Byrum, Erin Kibler and Mallory Ashby ran gutsy races as they were all hampered by illness and injuries.
Davis won the Girls teamp title with 18 points. The Lady Titans finished with 70 to place ahead of Bountiful (83), Viewmont (91), Woods Cross (116), and Clearfield (153).
For the third week in a row, the Boys had a different #1 finisher. Jaxon Hansen ran a strong race to place 8th overall 14:47. That was :59 faster than last year and the #2 mark ever by a Titan athlete. Preston Williams ran 16 seconds faster than last year finishing 14th in 15:18. Jeff Michel continues to improve rapidly running 15:22 to place 18th. Brandon Yardley’s 15:36 was 14 seconds faster than 2009 and good enough for 19th. Frank Owens and Dylan Rossmango had incredible 2:00 improvements to place 23rd and 27th in 15:46 and 15:56. Tom Hill continued the trend as he ran 1:36 faster to finish 30th. In JV action, Andrew Skidmore ruined Davis’ perfect score as he placed 8th in 16:10. Spencer Griffin (17:03), Parker Williams (17:20, 1:55 faster than last year), Cody Kelley (17:33) and Tyler Weaver (18:14) rounded out the scoring. Colby Johnson (18:18), Brady Cook (18:50), Joshua Lee (19:36), Colton Redford (20:28), Josh Flores (21:17), Tom Lakey (22:17) and Nate Lutz (24:09) continue to work hard and improve.
Davis won the Boys team title with 17 points. The Titans had 82 to edge out Viewmont (86) and Bountiful (88). Woods Cross (116), Northridge (151), Clearfield (192) and Layton (212) completed the scoring teams.

Syracuse will host Northridge, Roy, Viewmont and Weber Wednesday. The Girls will run one race at 3:45 and the Boys one race at 4:15. This will be a good race against two of the top teams in Region One.

XC Update - Sept 13, 2010
MURRAY INVITATIONAL
Stampede after stampede!!! That was the scene at Murray Park Friday as over 2000 runners from 60 schools ran in the six races. The Titans held their own against the top schools in the state. In the Girls Varsity race, Sharlie Dimick continued her great running as she finished 18th. Her time for the 3-mile course was 18:41. Had she not got caught up in the Boys’ stampede, she would have finished a few spots higher. Taylee Hamblin was battling a bad cold but still finished 54th in 19:27. Lindsey McFarland (112th, 20:23) and Daylyn Johnston (190th, 21:44) also ran strong races. Mallory Ashby ran very will considering she twisted her ankle at the start of the race and gutted it out to finish in 24:44. As a TEAM, the Lady Titans finished in 23rd place.
Cheyna Field, running the first race of her career, ran 23:03 to finish 59th in the Rookie Girls race. Erin Kibler (74th, 23:42), Kayla Byrum (80th, 23:51) and Dolly Johansen (120th, 24:32) also ran well. There were 288 finishers in that race.
Brandon Yardley was our top finisher in the Boys Varsity placing 51st in 16:26. He was closely followed by Jaxon Hansen (54th, 16:24), Preston Williams (61st, 16:35) and Jeff Michel (91st, 16:50). Weston Atkins (153rd, 17:30), Dylan Rossmango (199th, 17:49) and Tom Hill (200th, 17:49) helped lead the Titans to a 12th place finish. 47 schools fielded teams and 325 runners finished the race.
The JV Boys finished 18th in the team race. Frank Owens ran very well finishing 16th in 17:24. Spencer Griffin also ran well finishing 53rd in 18:02. Andrew Skidmore (129th, 18:53), Parker Williams (182nd, 19:44) and Tyler Weaver (259th, 20:28) rounded out the scoring. Josh Flores finished 425th in the 23:43. Over 460 finished the race, the largest of the day.
Cody Kelley was our top placer in the Rookie Boys as he finished 91st in 19:28. Colby Johnson (101st, 19:30), Tanner Parry (191st, 20:33), Joshua Lee (193rd, 20:37) and Brady Cook (211th, 20:49) completed the scoring. Also running well were Colton Redford (311th, 22:19), Tom Lakey (363rd, 24:05) and Nate Lutz (385th, 25:51).
The race was a good experience, especially for the new runners. There won’t be any more races with that many competitors.

XC Update - Sept 6, 2010
Titan XC Update - September 6, 2010
PRE-REGION MEET
League action got underway Wednesday at Layton Commons Park with all nine Region schools fielding teams. The Titans ran well finishing 3rd in both varsity races.
In the 2.0 mile Girls race, Davis won with 19 points, followed by Fremont with 97. The Lady Titans were just one point behind scoring 98. Sharlie Dimick (3rd, 12:23) and Taylee Hamblin (6th, 12:40) ran very strong races and were our top finishers. Lindsey McFarland (18th, 13:34), Daylyn Johnston (25th, 14:14) and Erin Kibler (46th, 15:46) rounded out the top five. Mallory Ashby (47th, 15:48), Kayla Byrum (48th, 15:52), and Paige Ryder (15:54) were also part of a good pack. There were over 130 girls in the race. Paige turned in an incredible performance having suffered a fracture in her hip with about a mile to go. Amazing that she was able to finish while in so much pain. Unfortunately for the TEAM, she will be out of action- possibly for the entire season. We wish her a speedy and successful recovery.
Davis also won the Boys Varsity race finishing with 19 points. Weber scored 85 to place 2nd and Syracuse 85 to wind up in 3rd. Leading the way for the Titans were Preston Williams (11th, 10:39), Jaxon Hansen (14th, 10:46), Brandon Yardley (19th, 11:02), Jeff Michel (24th, 11:16) and Weston Atkins (27th, 11:20). It showed that Davis is out of reach of anyone in the region, and that there will be some very tight competition to gain the other four spots to compete at the State Championships in October. Nylin was very informative while detailing his services available to the athletes as well as providing some valuable ideas about injury care and prevention. Three-time All-American Kurt Black’s presentation was also very informative. His five keys to success are things we can all benefit from. Hearing about and watching the races had to psyche everyone up. I wanted to head out and see how fast I could run the steeplechase or maybe even rabbit the LA Marathon. Coach Wilcox also had some great ideas showing that you can always give 100% and still never become an All-American. But giving 100% ensures that you will be able to look back without any regrets.

Selected as the Athletes of the Week were Paige Ryder, for her courageous performance at Pre-Region, and Weston Atkins, for his performance Wednesday, but more so for persevering through months of frustrating injuries. If he can stay healthy and keep consistent in the training, he will continue to make big improvements and be a force by the Region Championships.

Jake Rossmango made his XC debut for TCU Friday a great one. He finished 2nd for his team and 26th overall out of 99 runners at the Baylor Invitational. His time was 19:55 for the 6k race. VERY impressive. The Williams’ sisters also had very good collegiate XC debuts as Hannah ran 19:05 and McKayla 19:38 at the USU Invitational 5k Saturday. Austin Costley is having ITB problems and was held out of action. Haley Busby will run her first race next week in Montana.

PRE-REGION MEET
League action got underway Wednesday at Layton Commons Park with all nine Region schools fielding teams. The Titans ran well finishing 3rd in both varsity races.
In the 2.0 mile Girls race, Davis won with 19 points, followed by Fremont with 97. The Lady Titans were just one point behind scoring 98. Sharlie Dimick (3rd, 12:23) and Taylee Hamblin (6th, 12:40) ran very strong races and were our top finishers. Lindsey McFarland (18th, 13:34), Daylyn Johnston (25th, 14:14) and Erin Kibler (46th, 15:46) rounded out the top five. Mallory Ashby (47th, 15:48), Kayla Byrum (48th, 15:52), and Paige Ryder (15:54) were also part of a good pack. There were over 130 girls in the race. Paige turned in an incredible performance having suffered a fracture in her hip with about a mile to go. Amazing that she was able to finish while in so much pain. Unfortunately for the TEAM, she will be out of action- possibly for the entire season. We wish her a speedy and successful recovery.

GREAT NEWS- PARENT/ATHLETE NIGHT
Our Parent / Athlete Night will be Thursday at 6:30 pm in the Choir Room. I’ve been very fortunate to get Kurt Black as our guest speaker. He was the State Cross Country Champion at Davis High in 1985 and went on to become a three-time All-American at Weber State. He led WSU to a 4th-place finish in the NCAA Cross Country Championships, the highest finish ever by a Utah college. His steeplechase PR is one of the top times ever run by an American collegiate athlete. Nylin Johnson from Mountain Land Physical Therapy will also be there to discuss running injuries and ways to prevent them. We want ALL parents and athletes to attend.

GRASS RELAYS
There were some outstanding performances by the Titans at the Grass Relays. Over 40 schools entered teams and over 1000 runners competed. The meet is run over a two-mile course with several obstacles in the form of bales of hay placed throughout the route. In varsity TEAM action, the Girls finished 23rd and the Boys 18th.
Freshman Sharlie Dimick turned in the top individual effort for the Lady Titans. Her time of 12:45 was the 7th fastest of the day, 4th best for 5A athletes, and the 2nd fastest ever run by a Lady Titan. Taylee Hamblin ran 13:23 (35 seconds faster than last year) in her first high school race in six months. Considering her limited actual running mileage during that time, it was a great performance. Lindsey McFarland, Daylyn Johnston and Kayla Byrum ran very well to lead the Lady Titan Varsity squad. Shelby Cadwell left her soccer ball behind to post our fastest JV finish.
Preston Williams (11:38), Jaxon Hansen (11:44), Brandon Yardley (11:47), Weston Atkins (12:07) and Dylan Rossmango (12:33) ran well to lead the Boys varsity. Jeff Michel ran 11:51 in his first high school race, Tom Hill finished in 11:58 and Spencer Griffin in 12:03 to lead the J.V. finishers.
For many, it was the first race of their your school careers. While many felt a little disappointed with their performances, we hope that no one is discouraged. The mark set at the meet is just a starting point for the rest of the year. One of the best things we saw was the support each of you showed for your TEAMmates during their races. This encouragement was impressive and appreciated by those competing..

# August 2nd - 6th is the High Altitude Camp. The final waiver, remainder of the camp fee, and Physical “A” or “B” Form are due by July 27th.
# While there are still three workouts listed for each day, most of you who have been running regularly should be doing the middle workouts. In most cases, the top workout should only be for those with a full year of fairly consistent training experience.
# Layton Ellison Park has been added as a workout site. It is located directly south of Swan Lakes Golf Course. The address is 2200 W, 700 N. Note that the address is in LAYTON. Steed Park has also been added. It is located at 1000 west 300 north in Clearfield.
# Beginning August 10th, the Tuesday / Thursday workouts will be at 7:00 pm instead of in the morning. This is to help prepare you for the heat that we will be running in when school starts.

Workouts - June 21 to July 12
ITEMS OF IMPORTANCE

2. The workouts listed are for those who have been following the first three weeks of workouts as handed out in May. If you are just starting up now, follow the original (first three weeks) of the workout schedule.
3. IT IS IMPORTANT TO COMPLETE THE WORKOUTS AS LISTED AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE.
4. Following a regular lifting/strength training program can greatly enhance your success in the fall. We will open the weight room after our scheduled TEAM workouts on Mondays and Thursdays.
5. DON’T NEGLECT THE AB’S. Pillars and crunches are easy to do while watching TV, reading, etc.
6. Mountain Land Physical Therapy will be providing physicals to student athletes, probably about the middle of July. The cost is only $15 and the money will be donated back to the school. I’ll let you know on the date when it is finalized.
7. The Syracuse High Altitude Running Camp will be held August 2nd - August 6th at Marsh Lake in the Uintahs. The $50 deposit and initial permission slip is due July 13th. The remainder of the $75-125 fee plus waiver and either a Physical “A” or “B” Form is due on July 29th.

WORKOUT TERMS USED
TR= Training Run - This just means running at a fairly constant pace (check out Tables 3.1 and 3.2 to see what your pace should be- use E/L column). They should not have you wheezing, gasping, etc. Generally your heartrate should reach the 160-180 range during these runs. (It may be higher if it is hot.) These are your longest runs in terms of distance, although some TR’s may be longer, but not as intense.
FR= Fartlek Run - This literally means "speed play". It this type of workout you should vary your pace, terrain, etc. When done properly, it is as hard of a workout as you will have. Hilly trails, parks, etc. are good places for these workouts, although the roads will do.
TemR= Tempo Run - This is a shorter run at a faster pace. Check Table 3.2 for you “T” Pace. Your heartrate should get up into the 180-200 range for these workouts.
TrR= Trail Run - Use a variety of terrain, but be careful- watch out for turned ankles, rattlesnakes, etc. The pace should be about the same as your Training Runs.

Syracuse High Cross Country
May 31 - June 22, 2010 Workouts
There are three workouts listed for each day. The first is for athletes who have at least one year of distance experience and are at a relatively high fitness level. The second is for runners with some recent running/soccer background and a moderate fitness level. The third workout listed is for those with little or no distance running background.
KEYS AND SUGGESTIONS FOR YOUR WORKOUTS
1. Remember to e-mail your workout logs by each Monday even if you are not completing the entire workout schedule as outlined. Send them to: rbuhrley@dsdmail.net
2. Don't increase your mileage too rapidly. Maximum increase should be no more than a 10% each week.
3. Run on the softest surfaces available. This will help prevent shin splints and is easier for your legs to recover for the next workout. Grass is great, as are trails, etc.
4. Change sides of the road when running in an area with little traffic and wide shoulders. That helps equalize the stress on the "downhill" side of your legs.
5. Be as consistent as possible in the time you run. It is tough on the body to run a hard workout in the evening and then come back the next morning with another hard one.
6. If you decide to run two-a-days, just go every other day. In other words, three workouts in two days. Check with me first if you are interested in two-a-days.
7. Warm up and down properly. Jog, stretch, and do some basic running mechanic drills for 10-15 minutes before and 5-10 after each workout. This is especially true if the workout is an intense one.
8. Use a variety of routes and terrain (trails are good). Try not to run the same route every day.
9. You can substitute time for distance. A 5 mile TR becomes a 40 minute TR if that is your normal pace.
10. Cross-train when you suspect an injury or when you feel “hammered”. Biking, swimming, “power hiking” are good forms of cross training. KEY: try to keep the heart rate up close to the same level as when you are running.
11. 25-30% of your weekly mileage should come from your long run (usually Saturday- Monday if racing on Saturday).
12. Incorporate some strength training into your routine. There are several things you can do to help your strength level without having access to a gym, i.e. running hills, pushups, crunches, pull-ups, lunges, step-ups, etc.
13. Have good training shoes. Quality shoes help prevent injuries. Striders in Layton will give you a discount and are also very knowledgeable about helping you select the right shoe.
14. Find someone of the same running ability to work out with. That helps keep you motivated.
15. Recruit!! Find people new to the sport- encourage them to come to the workouts.

NOTE: For this first set of workouts, plan on meeting at the Fernwood Campground trail head Monday mornings at 7:00 am (or 6:30 am at Syracuse High if you need a ride) and at Jensen Park Thursday mornings at 7:00 am. We will lift weights at the high school after the run when schedules permit.

Follow Fernwood Drive until you come to a “T” in the road (can’t go any further). Turn right on Snoqualmie Drive. Keep going until you reach the parking lot at the Fernwood trail head.
From Gentile Ave: Follow Gentile east to Hwy 89. Go north on 89 to the stoplight at Cherry Lane (gas station and Grounds for Coffee are on the right). Turn right onto Valley View Drive. Go north for .50 miles. Turn right onto Fernwood Drive. Follow Fernwood Drive until you come to a “T” in the road (can’t go any further). Turn right on Snoqualmie Drive. Keep going until you reach the parking lot at the Fernwood trail head.

Follow Bluff Road south to about 3300 south. The large park is located on the west side of Bluff Road.
May 31 - June 22, 2010 Workouts
There are three workouts listed for each day. The first is for athletes who have at least one year of distance experience and are at a relatively high fitness level. The second is for runners with some recent running/soccer background and a moderate fitness level. The third workout listed is for those with little or no distance running background.
KEYS AND SUGGESTIONS FOR YOUR WORKOUTS
1. Remember to e-mail your workout logs by each Monday even if you are not completing the entire workout schedule as outlined. Send them to: rbuhrley@dsdmail.net
2. Don't increase your mileage too rapidly. Maximum increase should be no more than a 10% each week.
3. Run on the softest surfaces available. This will help prevent shin splints and is easier for your legs to recover for the next workout. Grass is great, as are trails, etc.
4. Change sides of the road when running in an area with little traffic and wide shoulders. That helps equalize the stress on the "downhill" side of your legs.
5. Be as consistent as possible in the time you run. It is tough on the body to run a hard workout in the evening and then come back the next morning with another hard one.
6. If you decide to run two-a-days, just go every other day. In other words, three workouts in two days. Check with me first if you are interested in two-a-days.
7. Warm up and down properly. Jog, stretch, and do some basic running mechanic drills for 10-15 minutes before and 5-10 after each workout. This is especially true if the workout is an intense one.
8. Use a variety of routes and terrain (trails are good). Try not to run the same route every day.
9. You can substitute time for distance. A 5 mile TR becomes a 40 minute TR if that is your normal pace.
10. Cross-train when you suspect an injury or when you feel “hammered”. Biking, swimming, “power hiking” are good forms of cross training. KEY: try to keep the heart rate up close to the same level as when you are running.
11. 25-30% of your weekly mileage should come from your long run (usually Saturday- Monday if racing on Saturday).
12. Incorporate some strength training into your routine. There are several things you can do to help your strength level without having access to a gym, i.e. running hills, pushups, crunches, pull-ups, lunges, step-ups, etc.
13. Have good training shoes. Quality shoes help prevent injuries. Striders in Layton will give you a discount and are also very knowledgeable about helping you select the right shoe.
14. Find someone of the same running ability to work out with. That helps keep you motivated.
15. Recruit!! Find people new to the sport- encourage them to come to the workouts.

NOTE: For this first set of workouts, plan on meeting at the Fernwood Campground trail head Monday mornings at 7:00 am (or 6:30 am at Syracuse High if you need a ride) and at Jensen Park Thursday mornings at 7:00 am. We will lift weights at the high school after the run when schedules permit.
WE WILL MEET AT Jensen Park, TUESDAY, June 22nd AT 7:00 AM TO HAND OUT THE NEXT SET OF WORKOUTS. From then on, we will continue to meet two-three times per week as a TEAM.
WORKOUT TERMS USED
TR= Training Run - This just means running at a fairly constant pace (check out Tables 3.1 and 3.2 to see what your pace should be) which is not so hard it will have you wheezing, gasping, etc. Generally your heartrate should reach the 160-180 range during these runs. It may be higher if it is hot, includes hills, etc. These are your longest runs in terms of distance.
FR= Fartlek Run - This literally means "speed play". In this type of workout you should vary your pace, terrain, etc. When done properly, it is as hard of a workout as you will have. Hilly trails, parks, etc. are good places for these, although the roads will do.
TempR= Tempo Run - This is a shorter run at a very hard, constant pace. Your heartrate should get up into the 180-200 range for these workouts.
TrR= Trail Run - Use a variety of terrain, and watch out for turned ankles, rattlesnakes, etc.
Strides= 5-6 x 20-30 second runs at “fast and relaxed” pace using a quick turnover. Concentrate on relaxation and good running technique. DO NOT SPRINT!!
INT= Interval Workout - These workouts consist of running set distances or times at a certain pace with a set recovery in between each. The recovery phase may be passive (easy walk, stretch, etc.) or active (fast walk, jogging, etc.), depending on the intensity desired. These should not be included more than once a week during this phase of your training.
