Titan XC Update - October 17, 2010

OFF TO STATE!!!!
It was a great day for the Titans at the Region One Cross Country Championships. In an extremely competitive region, both Boys and Girls qualified for the State Championships. There were many great performances that highlighted the meet and typified the season. The weather cooperated as we had clear skies and perfect conditions for the race run over the 3.0 mile course at Layton Commons Park.
In the Girls JV race, Mallory Ashby and Kayla Byrum overcame injuries and illnesses to run their best races of the year. This got us off to a great start.
In Boys JV, the Titans finished 3rd in the TEAM race. Dylan Rossmango (13th, 17:39), Andrew Skidmore (15th, 17:55), Mike Russell (16th, 17:57), Parker Williams (17th, 18:03) and Cody Kelley (33rd, 19:12) all ran great to pace the TEAM finish.
The Girls Varsity race provided some tense moments as officials added and re-added the scores. Four schools were within three points for the final three state qualifying spots. When the verdict came in, the Lady Titans had secured the #4 place ensuring their place on the starting line at State. The final scores were: Davis (24), Viewmont (66), Fremont (108), Syracuse (109), Roy (109) and Weber (110). Had one of the top six Varsity Lady Titans faltered even one place, we would not have made it to State. I’ve never seen an outcome anywhere near as close. We came out on top of many close finishes because of some great efforts by some tough ladies that refused to lose. Sharlie Dimick had an incredible race to finish 2nd in 18:42. In the 14-year history of races on this course, this was the #14 time ever run and would have won most years. Lindsey McFarland moved up from 25th to 15th over the last mile to help the cause immensely. Daylyn Johnston ran her usual strong race to finish 27th in 21:19. Courtney Hamilton also had a great race to place 29th in 21:31. Dolly Johanson passed several runners over the last 500 meters to finish 36th running 21:47. Cheyna Field’s 22:20 was the place that earned us the tiebreaker and a trip to State. GREAT JOB!!! And Erin Kibler stepped up at the last minute to run varsity and her 23:11 was her top performance of the year. Even though it can’t be proven, I think the deciding factor in the Girls making it to State was Taylee Hamblin’s presence. The Lady Titans dedicated this race to her and received some extra energy from her to get the TEAM to State. Thanks, Taylee!!
While the Boys finish was not quite as dramatic, it also took some top efforts to get us to State. The final scores for State qualifying teams was as follows: Davis (19), Weber (76), Syracuse (103), Viewmont (103), Clearfield (123). Preston Williams really stepped up and finished 8th in 16:06. Jaxon Hansen struggled, but gutted it out in the end to place 17th in 16:29. His best race is coming up. Jeff Michel (21st, 16:46) and Brandon Yardley (22nd, 16:47) finished strong to help the cause. Tom Hill (35th, 17:31), Spencer Griffin (36th, 17:32), and Frank Owens (38th, 17:35) ran great to put us into 3rd as a TEAM. Weston Atkins showed what a stud he is by running his first race in several weeks to try to help the TEAM. Even though he didn’t impact the scores, his efforts inspired the other Titans and helped us get to State.
Bottom line is both TEAMS are on the way to State. While there were some individual “ups and downs”, the TEAMS got it done. Now for the next step.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Taylee Hamblin- inspired the Girls to a State spot- many future Lady Titans will have to hear “Taylee” stories. Mallory Ashby- ran her best race of the year. Courtney Hamilton- thanks, you got us to State. Andrew Skidmore- final XC race a very good one. Dylan Rossmango- really laid it on the line, even if the results weren’t what he hoped for. Jeff Michel- ran a very strong race. Josh Flores- best race of the year to finish off a very good XC career.

EVERYONE will be on the excused list to go to the meet. State really shows what Cross Country is all about. The state’s best put it on the line, and we are among the state’s best. Top ten finishes by both squads would be a great achievement.
