Titan XC Update - September 27, 2010

NORTHRIDGE/ROY/WEBER/VIEWMONT MEET
The Lady Titans ran very well at the five-way meet held Wednesday at Syracuse. Viewmont easily won with 33 points. Weber followed with 50, we had 65, Roy 68 and Northridge did not have a full team. The results would have n somewhat different if we would have had Taylee Hamblin. She is out with an injury- we hope to have her back by Region.
Sharlie Dimick ran a strong race to capture the individual title. Her time was 19:55 over the very challenging 3-mile course. Lindsey McFarland was 10th in 21:44. Courtney Hamilton ran her first race finishing 16th in 23:06. Daylyn Johnston (18th, 23:13), and Cheyna Field (20th, 23:36) rounded out the scoring. Mikelann Wilcox (23rd, 23:48) and Dolly Johanson (27th, 24:57) completed our top seven.
The Titans captured the boys title with 45 points. Weber (56), Viewmont (59), Northridge (91) and Roy (123) were the other schools competing. Individually, Jaxon Hansen ran an aggressive race to finish 2nd in 16:47. Brandon Yardley (7th, 17:19), Jeff Michel (9th, 17:20) and Preston Williams (10th, 17:27) were grouped right behind Jaxon. Dylan Rossmango (17th, 18:02), Tom Hill (18th, 18:07), and Frank Owens (19th, 18:08) formed another strong pack to help secure the win.

WAHSATCH RENDEZVOUS
The Titans ran very well at this large invitational. With nearly 20 schools competing, the girls finished 8th and the boys 7th.
Sharlie Dimick continued to run great finishing 2nd overall in 19:14 over the challenging 3.0 mile course. The girl who beat her is the defending 3A State champion. Lindsey McFarland (21:17), Daylyn Johnston (22:11), Mikelann Wilcox (22:54) and Cheyna Field (23:54) ran strong races. Because of injuries, we had to juggle the varsity lineup quite a bit. Erin Kirby and Dolly Johanson stepped up and ran very well to help the TEAM.
Jaxon Hansen showed he is ready to run with the top kids in the state. He finished 2nd in the #1 race and had the third fastest time of the day running 16:14. Brandon Yardley (16:59), Preston Williams (17:08), Dylan Rossmango (17:55), Tom Hill (17:58), Frank Owens (18:14) and Spencer Griffin (18:19) ran well to help the cause. Parker Williams ran his best race of the year and finished as our top JV runner finishing in 18:37.

Selected as the Athletes of the Week were Cheyna Field, Frank Owens and Spencer Griffin.

REGION OPEN MEET AT WEBER
Our meet this Wednesday is at Weber High. Viewmont, Fremont and Layton will also be there. As far as I know, the Girls will run at 3:45, Boys at 4:15. You will be excused at 1:45 with the bus leaving at 2:00. This will be our only meet of the week. We may have a Saturday morning workout.

We wish Coach Wilcox and Mrs. Dimick good luck at the St. George Marathon. I’m sure they’ll do a great job.

ALUMNI UPDATE
Jake Rossmango ran well at the Oklahoma State Invitational. With 175 runners competing, Jake placed 101st for TCU. Our “adopted” alum, Jared Ward, was BYU’s 4th runner and 28th overall out of 213 at the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational in Minnesota.

Titan XC Update - September 20, 2010

DAVIS DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS
For the third straight year, the Titans finished second to Davis in both Girls and Boys varsity races at the Davis District Championships held at Layton City Park. This was the 23rd year the meet has been held, and several Titans raced their way onto the All-Time list of top performances over the 2.75 mile course.
Sharlie Dimick again led the Lady Titans as she finished 3rd overall with a time of 17:39. That is just 7-seconds off the time posted last year by Hannah Williams. Not bad company. Taylee Hamblin ran 49 seconds faster than last year placing 7th in 18:00. That is the #3 time ever by a Lady Titan. Lindsey McFarland was 27 seconds faster than 2009 placing 16th in 19:01. Daylyn Johnston had a huge improvement of 1:39 to place 19th in 19:52. Cheyna Field continued her rapid improvement running 20:44 to finish in 25th place. Mikelann Wilcox (20:59) and Dolly Johansen (21:25) rounded out our top seven. It was good to have Mikelann running again even though it was with a great deal of pain. Dolly keeps improving each week and will be joining our top runners soon. Kayla Byrum, Erin Kibler and Mallory Ashby ran gutsy races as they were all hampered by illness and injuries.
Davis won the Girls teamp title with 18 points. The Lady Titans finished with 70 to place ahead of Bountiful (83), Viewmont (91), Woods Cross (116), and Clearfield (153).
For the third week in a row, the Boys had a different #1 finisher. Jaxon Hansen ran a strong race to place 8th overall 14:47. That was :59 faster than last year and the #2 mark ever by a Titan athlete. Preston Williams ran 16 seconds faster than last year finishing 14th in 15:18. Jeff Michel continues to improve rapidly running 15:22 to place 18th. Brandon Yardley’s 15:36 was 14 seconds faster than 2009 and good enough for 19th. Frank Owens and Dylan Rossmango had incredible 2:00 improvements to place 23rd and 27th in 15:46 and 15:56. Tom Hill continued the trend as he ran 1:36 faster to finish 30th. In JV action, Andrew Skidmore ruined Davis’ perfect score as he placed 8th in 16:10. Spencer Griffin (17:03), Parker Williams (17:20, 1:55 faster than last year), Cody Kelley (17:33) and Tyler Weaver (18:14) rounded out the scoring. Colby Johnson (18:18), Brady Cook (18:50), Joshua Lee (19:36), Colton Redford (20:28), Josh Flores (21:17), Tom Lakey (22:17) and Nate Lutz (24:09) continue to work hard and improve.
Davis won the Boys team title with 17 points. The Titans had 82 to edge out Viewmont (86) and Bountiful (88). Woods Cross (116), Northridge (151), Clearfield (192) and Layton (212) completed the scoring teams.

REGION OPEN MEET
Syracuse will host Northridge, Roy, Viewmont and Weber Wednesday. The Girls will run one race at 3:45 and the Boys one race at 4:15. This will be a good race against two of the top teams in Region One.

WAHSATCH RENDEZVOUS
This meet uses a different format for the Varsity races. It’s a fun meet and one in which we expect to be very competitive. The bus will leave at 6:30 am. The JV races start at 9:00 am, Varsity at 10:00. The meet is held at the Cottonwood Complex located at 4500 south, 1300 east in SLC.

ALUMNI UPDATE
Hannah (18:43) and McKayla Williams (19:27) and Haley Busby (21:42) all ran well at the Montana State Invitational. The course was a tough 3.0 miles in length. Jake Rossmango didn’t race this week and I think Austin Costley is red-shirting because of IT Band problems. Jared Ward, though not an alumni, but definitely a “friend of the program”, ran great at the Riverside Invitational in California. He finished 6th out of over 300 runners covering the 8k course in 24:18. That’s a 4:50 mile pace. And, for those who didn’t already know, he and Erica Christensen (who helped us in Track last year) are engaged to be married in October.

Stampede after stampede!!! That was the scene at Murray Park Friday as over 2000 runners from 60 schools ran in the six races. The Titans held their own against the top schools in the state. In the Girls Varsity race, Sharlie Dimick continued her great running as she finished 18th. Her time for the 3-mile course was 18:41. Had she not got caught up in the Boys’ stampede, she would have finished a few spots higher. Taylee Hamblin was battling a bad cold but still finished 54th in 19:27. Lindsey McFarland (112th, 20:23) and Daylyn Johnston (190th, 21:44) also ran strong races. Mallory Ashby ran very will considering she twisted her ankle at the start of the race and gutted it out to finish in 24:44. As a TEAM, the Lady Titans finished in 23rd place.
Cheyna Field, running the first race of her career, ran 23:03 to finish 59th in the Rookie Girls race. Erin Kibler (74th, 23:42), Kayla Byrum (80th, 23:51) and Dolly Johansen (120th, 24:32) also ran well. There were 288 finishers in that race.
Brandon Yardley was our top finisher in the Boys Varsity placing 51st in 16:26. He was closely followed by Jaxon Hansen (54th, 16:24), Preston Williams (61st, 16:35) and Jeff Michel (91st, 16:50). Weston Atkins (153rd, 17:30), Dylan Rossmango (199th, 17:49) and Tom Hill (200th, 17:49) helped lead the Titans to a 12th place finish. 47 schools fielded teams and 325 runners finished the race.
The JV Boys finished 18th in the team race. Frank Owens ran very well finishing 16th in 17:24. Spencer Griffin also ran well finishing 53rd in 18:02. Andrew Skidmore (129th, 18:53), Parker Williams (182nd, 19:44) and Tyler Weaver (259th, 20:28) rounded out the scoring. Josh Flores finished 425th in the 23:43. Over 460 finished the race, the largest of the day.
Cody Kelley was our top placer in the Rookie Boys as he finished 91st in 19:28. Colby Johnson (101st, 19:30), Tanner Parry (191st, 20:33), Joshua Lee (193rd, 20:37) and Brady Cook (211th, 20:49) completed the scoring. Also running well were Colton Redford (311th, 22:19), Tom Lakey (363rd, 24:05) and Nate Lutz (385th, 25:51).
The race was a good experience, especially for the new runners. There won’t be any more races with that many competitors.

23rd DAVIS DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS
All eight Davis County high schools will compete in this meet Wednesday at Layton Commons Park. The schedule will be as follows:
1:45 pm - Excused from class
2:00 pm - Bus Leaves
3:30 pm - Junior Varsity Boys
4:00 pm - Varsity and Junior Varsity Girls
4:30 pm - Varsity Boys
5:00 pm - Alumni/Parent/Sibling/Friends of XC
5:30 pm - Awards Ceremony at the Finish Line area
This meet also has a race for anyone interested in competing. Parents, siblings, fans, anyone can run the same 2.75 mile course. Spread the word to any interested runners.

Titan XC Update - September 6, 2010

PRE-REGION MEET
League action got underway Wednesday at Layton Commons Park with all nine Region schools fielding teams. The Titans ran well finishing 3rd in both varsity races.
In the 2.0 mile Girls race, Davis won with 19 points, followed by Fremont with 97. The Lady Titans were just one point behind scoring 98. Sharlie Dimick (3rd, 12:23) and Taylee Hamblin (6th, 12:40) ran very strong races and were our top finishers. Lindsey McFarland (18th, 13:34), Daylyn Johnston (25th, 14:14) and Erin Kibler (46th, 15:46) rounded out the top five. Mallory Ashby (47th, 15:48), Kayla Byrum (48th, 15:52), and Paige Ryder (15:54) were also part of a good pack. There were over 130 girls in the race. Paige turned in an incredible performance having suffered a fracture in her hip with about a mile to go. Amazing that she was able to finish while in so much pain. Unfortunately for the TEAM, she will be out of action- possibly for the entire season. We wish her a speedy and successful recovery.
Davis also won the Boys Varsity race finishing with 19 points. Weber scored 85 to place 2nd and Syracuse 85 to wind up in 3rd. Leading the way for the Titans were Preston Williams (11th, 10:39), Jaxon Hansen (14th, 10:46), Brandon Yardley (19th, 11:02), Jeff Michel (24th, 11:16) and Weston Atkins (27th, 11:20). Thomas Hill (35th, 11:37), Dylan Rossmango (36th, 11:37) and Spencer Griffin (11:41) also ran very well. There were 73 athletes in the Varsity race. The meet was some what indicative of what lies ahead of us as far as region competition. It showed that Davis is out of reach of anyone in the region, and that there will be some very tight competition to gain the other four spots to compete at the State Championships in October. It will take some real work to make it to State this year.

PARENT / ATHLETE NIGHT
Thanks to all who attended and of course a special thanks to Nylin Johnson and Kurt Black. Nylin was very informative while detailing his services available to the athletes as well as providing some valuable ideas about injury care and prevention. Three-time All-American Kurt Black’s presentation was also very informative. His five keys to success are things we can all benefit from. Hearing about and watching the races had to psyche everyone up. I wanted to head out and see how fast I could run the steeplechase or maybe even rabbit the LA Marathon. Coach Wilcox also had some great ideas showing that you can always give 100% and still never become an All-American. But giving 100% ensures that you will be able to look back without any regrets.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Selected as the Athletes of the Week were Paige Ryder, for her courageous performance at Pre-Region, and Weston Atkins, for his performance Wednesday, but more so for persevering through months of frustrating injuries. If he can stay healthy and keep consistent in the training, he will continue to make big improvements and be a force by the Region Championships.

MURRAY INVITATIONAL
This is one of the oldest and most prestigious meets in Utah. Most of the top programs in the state will be there. It’s a fun course with each race resembling a buffalo stampede. The race will be run at Murray Park located at 5100 south State in Murray. The schedule is as follows:

ALUMNI UPDATE
Jake Rossmango made his XC debut for TCU Friday a great one. He finished 2nd for his team and 26th overall out of 99 runners at the Baylor Invitational. His time was 19:55 for the 6k race. VERY impressive. The Williams’ sisters also had very good collegiate XC debuts as Hannah ran 19:05 and McKayla 19:38 at the USU Invitational 5k Saturday. Austin Costley is having ITB problems and was held out of action. Haley Busby will run her first race next week in Montana.
