ANOTHER GREAT WEEK
Week two of the competitive season was very impressive. Great two-person relays Monday, Pre-Region Wednesday and some very challenging 1000's Friday made this a very tough week. If you felt drained Saturday, (hopefully following a good, long run) you had a great week. As coaches, we have been impressed with the numbers (the most we’ve had involved at Syracuse since the school opened), the mileage (the most TEAM mileage for the summer) and the addition of so many new people to the sport. While we don’t have a strong commitment from 100% of you, the vast majority are showing that you are willing to work hard and make the necessary sacrifices to become the very best runner and member of the TEAM possible. Let’s strive to get the strong commitment needed from 100% of you over the next seven weeks- State is that close!
PRE-REGION
The Titans ran very well at the Pre-Region meet held Wednesday at Layton Commons Park. It was a good meet to see where we stack up against the rest of the region and also a good first meet for many of the Titans. The race was run on the region course, though it was shortened to 2.0 miles.
The top performance of the meet was turned in by Brandon Yardley. He ran 10:24 to place 4th and pace the Titans to a 2nd-place behind Davis, currently ranked #1 in Utah and #6 in the nation. Davis finished with 17 points, the Titans tallied 55, and Weber 76. Fremont (129), Northridge (137) and Layton (166) completed the team scoring. Jaxon Hansen (10th, 10:58), Mike Russell (12th, 11:12), Tom Hill (15th, 11:14) and Frank Owens (16th, 11:17) rounded out the top-five scorers. Parker Greenhalgh (17th, 11:19) and Landon Greenhalgh (22nd, 11:29) completed the top-seven varsity runners. Cody Kelley was right there, also finishing in 11:29.
The Girls 3rd-place team finish was led by Sharlie Dimick as she placed 12th running 13:40. Davis won the team title with 19 points while Weber was 2nd with 48, the Lady Titans 3rd with 81 and Fremont’s 88 points put them in 4th. Cheyna Field (15th, 14:10), Lindsey Bailey (17th, 14:38), Erin Kibler (18th, 14:38) and Shelby Cadwell (19th, 14:41) were the top-five scorers. Rachel Markham (25th, 15:20) and Leisha Jones (28th, 15:37) completed the varsity scorers.
Cody Kelley ran 1:30 faster than last year and Erin Kibler 1:08 faster- shows what some quality summer mileage can do. Besides these obvious highlights, it was great to see so many athletes new to the sport run so well- especially the new, younger girls like Lindsey Bailey, Leisha Jones, Katrina Dunlap, and Becca Jacobsen, all running very well in their first cross country race. And Lauren Busby improved almost two-minutes in her mile average pace over her Highland performance. The future looks great for Lady Titan XC!!

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Selected as the Athletes of the Week for week #2 were Lindsey Bailey and Brandon Yardley. Lindsey has always thought of herself as a sprinter- this may change after her first cross country race. Brandon’s time was the fastest ever run by a Titan over the Pre-Region course.
PARENT / ATHLETE NIGHT
A huge thanks to Rob and Stacy Wilcox for putting together the dinner Wednesday. And thanks to all who brought food items to help out. I think this is a great addition to our annual opening meeting. Thanks to Nylin Johnson and Becky Lund from Mountainland Physical Therapy for their support. And thanks to Jared Ward for traveling up from Provo to give some great advice- ideas that can help in running and life. Perhaps his key idea: aim high, set high goals. They may not all be reached, but the journey to achieve them will reap great rewards. Jared is a great runner, but he is an even better person.
USU COLLEGIATE INVITATIONAL
Hannah Williams ran 18:05 for a 5k run in a hay field and was USU’s top finisher at the USU Invitational. She finished 11th against some great competition from WSU, BYU and Utah. Jared Ward (our honorary alum) won the men’s race winning by 11-seconds over 2nd place. He covered the 7000 meter (about 4.2 miles) course in 20:47, probably a sup-5:00 minute pace. It was a fun race to watch.
WASATCH INVITATIONAL
We will travel to Soldier Hollow in Midway Saturday for this fun and challenging race. The course is run over trails in the hills, a “real” cross country race. A unique feature is that they have a coach/parent/open race run over the same course. If any parents want to run, email Lisa Willey at: lkwilley@gmail.com The cost is $20.00 which includes a t-shirt.
The schedule is as follows:
6:00 am - bus leaves - get everything out of the school Friday
8:00 am - Open Race
9:00 am - Girls J.V.
9:30 am - Boys J.V.
10:00 am - Girls Varsity
10:30 am - Boys Varsity

ED SWANSON FUNDRAISER
This fundraiser is being held Saturday, September 10th. Ed and his family have close ties to and have been big supporters of Syracuse High. I am including information concerning the various events being held to help raise money for the expenses the family has incurred since the surgery. It could be a real “fun run” to shake out the sore muscles after running the hills at Soldier Hollow.
“On May 2, 2011, Ed underwent surgery to repair damage to his heart. Although he continues to heal and get stronger it has been a longer process than anticipated. We are asking for your help and generosity in our fundraiser for Ed and his family to offset medical bills.”
