XC Update - September 25, 2011

“WAY TO GO TITANS”
Great email sent to me earlier this week.
“While we were waiting for the awards to end at the Murray invitational last Friday another Box Elder coach and I were hanging out under one of the pavilions. The two of us were doing what we could to clean up where our kids had been. Your athletes were waiting too when one of your coaches (actually it was a couple captains) suggested that your team do a little picking up. Within minutes your athletes cleaned up a giant mess left by dozens of other schools. I was impressed. Way to go Titans.”
Wayne McConkie, Box Elder High School

OPEN REGION @ FREMONT
With all of the Region One schools except Davis competing, the Lady Titans picked up a 2nd place finish behind Weber at Fremont Wednesday. Sharlie Dimick continued to run well placing 6th in 20:48 over the 3.0 mile course. Erin Kibler, Rachel Markham, Shelby Cadwell and Lindsey Bailey ran well to secure the 2nd place finish.
Brandon Yardley, Jaxon Hansen, and Mike Russell swept the top three spots, and Jeff Michel, and Landon and Parker Greenhalgh placed in the top nine to easily win the Boys race. They had a 28-second split, our best of the year.

HERRIMAN INVITATIONAL
For those who like hills, this was the race for you. This was run on the toughest course in Utah- maybe the toughest course I’ve seen in high school XC. The Titans fared very well against the 11 team field. The Girls JV finished 4th, Girls Varsity 7th, and the Boys JV and Varsity 3rd.
Mallory Ashby had her best race of the year in finishing 13th in the Girls J.V. race running 24:55 over the 5000 meter course. Adriana McFarland (15th, 25:04), Kayla Berryman (22nd, 25:35), Maddy Neyts (27th, 26:04) and Katelyn Davidson (52nd, 27:31) completed the top five.
In the Girls Varsity, Sharlie Dimick finished 13th in 22:12. Cheyna Field was close behind placing 25th while running 22:54. Rachel Markham (34th, 23:46), Lindsey Bailey (42nd, 24:01) and Erin Kibler (44th, 24:20) rounded out the scoring. Katrina Dunlap ran her first varsity race and turned in a very good 47th place finish running 24:33. Shelby Cadwell was close behind in 24:48.
Cody Kelley (4th, 18:42) and Frank Owens (5th, 18:45) ran great races to pace the Boys J.V. to their 3rd place finish. They actually tied with Westlake for 2nd but lost out on the tiebreaker. Spencer Griffin (25th, 19:55), Jeff Reed (33rd, 20:09) and Jeff Knighton (39th, 20:21) were the other scorers.
Brandon Yardley was again our top finisher in the Boys Varsity. He ran 17:27 to place 7th. Jaxon Hansen (13th, 17:47), Mike Russell (17th, 18:00), Landon Greenhalgh (20th, 18:05), Parker Greenhalgh (22nd, 18:18), Jeff Michel (24th, 18:28) and Tom Hill (30th, 18:43) ran gutsy races over the tough course to lead the 3rd-place finish. We were just one point out of 2nd.
While it’s usually the same athletes spotlighted each week, the entire TEAM is putting forth the same efforts in workouts and races. Athletes such as Jaycie Smith, Lauren Busby, Leisha Jones, Becca Jacobsen, Jessica Howes, Nicole Lavely, Jared Godfrey, Mitchell Dill, Brady Cook, Tom Lakey, Nate Seffker, Cameron Dower, Cooper Park, Spencer Hull and Nick Merriman may not crack our top-seven this year, but their commitment and hard work help make everyone better. Their efforts are largely unrewarded, but not unrecognized by the coaches and their teammates.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Selected as the Athletes of the Week for week #5 were Mallory Ashby, Adriana McFarland, Jeff Reed, and Nick Merriman. All had great races this week and continue to improve. They make our TEAM much better because of their hard work and commitment to the program.
OPEN REGION AT SYRACUSE
All of the Region One schools will come to Syracuse for the Open Region meet Wednesday. The Girls will run at 3:45, the Boys at 4:15. We may split the Boys into two races- we’ll see what the numbers look like.

TITAN “INVITATIONAL”
We are running well and do not need another invitational before Region. Therefore, instead of going to Orem or Park City, we are going to have an intrasquad meet Saturday morning. We will start things early enough so you can still have your Homecoming “day activities”, even if we have to run at 5:00 am. Details will be decided upon Monday. Whatever the format, parents, siblings, etc., will be invited to run.

GOOD LUCK COACH WILCOX at the St. George Marathon!!
