STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
The end of the regular season concluded with some outstanding performances at the State Championships. The Titans took advantage of the perfect weather to improve on last years standings where both TEAMS placed 12th. This year the Girls finished 10th and the Boys 6th, just one point out of 5th. With 24 5A schools, those are some impressive finishes.
Sharlie Dimick again led the Lady Titans with her 31st place finish. She covered the tough 3.0 mile course in 20:26. Lindsey Bailey, who we weren’t even sure if we would have her run XC this year, ran 22:02 to place 72nd. Erin Kibler (74th, 22:06) and Rachel Markham (76th, 22:08) were right behind Lindsey. And there was not much of a gap back to Shelby Cadwell (82nd, 22:28) and Leisha Jones (87th, 22:42). Cheyna Field rounded out the Titan TEAM finishing 105th in 23:39. Much more on that later.
Brandon Yardley duplicated Sharlie’s feat of being our #1 runner in every meet this year. He had definitely come a long way since his first year involved in the program. His time of 16:30 put him in 20th place and earned him a 3rd Team All-State honor. Jaxon Hansen also ran well finishing 33rd while running 16:47. He also had a great year finishing as our #2 runner in every meet. Mike Russell (40th), Parker Greenhalgh (41st), and Landon Greenhalgh (42nd) finished in a virtual dead heat in 16:59 and 17:00. These three had run one XC race each before this season. I doubt there were many ahead of them with less experience. They had great seasons. Jeff Michel (49th, 17:08) and Frank Owens (61st, 17:27) finished their XC careers with strong performances.
All 14 athletes toed the line hoping for the best performance of their lives. While all 14 didn’t achieve this lofty goal, each and every one of the them can say they gave 100%. No one can ask for more.
Complete results of all races can be found at: www.runnercard.com.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Chosen as Athletes of the Week were Sharlie Dimick, Frank Owens and Jaxon Hansen. Sharlie concluded the season having finished as our #1 runner in every race. Frank and Jaxon concluded their very successful SHS XC careers running tough races at State.
WHY WE RUN
A few days ago we watched a clip titled “Why We Run”. While there were several instances throughout the season that we could use in a similar video, I think Cheyna’s state experience would be the most appropriate. Obviously, she struggled at Region and State- no one can put a finger on why. As she approached the two-mile mark at State, I was tempted to order her out of the race. I was worried something might be seriously wrong and she could “pull a Maddy” on us. However, she struggled on, gave everything she had, and finished about 3-minutes slower than she would have liked in her final high school TEAM cross country race. As I made my way to the finish- I think purposely moving slower than usual giving time for the lump in my throat and tears in my eyes to disappear, I finally found Cheyna and her Mom. After a wet hug (Cheyna sweats as much as I do) and a brief chat, it was apparent that she had survived and was OK. The next day I received an email from Jeani (Cheyna’s Mom). I hope they don’t mind me sharing a quote from it.
“...One girl, however, had the slowest race of her Titan XC career in the most important race of her over-a-year’s time working with the TEAM. Directly after what she felt was the hardest race she has ever run she said, ‘Running that race meant everything to me! I’m numb. I don’t know what to feel here. I tried my very hardest and did my very worst! I don’t know what’s wrong. I do know one thing though, if I would have known at the beginning that it would end like this… I wouldn’t have changed it. I would have still worked my hardest. I would have still done it all.’”
That’s why we run and that’s why we coach. And that’s why we all love Cheyna. There is no way the Titans would trade our “Chey” for that other “Shae”. While “Shae” is a great runner and an outstanding young lady, no one can touch our “Chey”.
GREAT SEASON TITANS
The end of the regular season is a good time to reflect on the last few months. What was good, what not so good. What has to be continued, what has to be changed. Overall, it was a great season. Most schools would love to have had the successes on the field of competition we have had. However, the real signs of a great season are the lessons learned and the memories that have been made. Those who gained the most (no matter where they finished in the races) are those who are more self-disciplined, dedicated, motivated and goal-oriented than before the training began. And, of course, the memories: trails, High Altitude Camp, relays, races, abs, TEAM dinners, videos and boring talks by an old man, etc. Let’s keep building on what has been started.
THANKS, THANKS, THANKS!!
To Coach Wilcox and Haley Busby. The best co-head coaches in the state. You both made huge contributions to our success this year, more than you realize. And thanks to all parents for your support this year. While the contributions of all of you may have gone unrewarded, they have not been unappreciated.

XC Update - October 16, 2011
THANKS TITANS
The show of support for the Williams and Hinds families was great. I’m sure it was greatly appreciated. Great job by Preston speaking at his Dad’s services. He gave an outstanding talk and the remarks were very appropriate for a great man.
Nice job by the Titans at the Race for Gracie. Coach Wilcox, Jared Godfrey and Haley Busby swept the first three places in the fun run. The support by the Titans was greatly appreciated by those involved with the fund raiser.
REGION CHAMPIONSHIPS
There were some huge performances by many in leading the Titans to some great TEAM finishes. The Boys Varsity finished 2nd, Girls Varsity 3rd, Girls JV 2nd and Boys JV 3rd.
The Girls Varsity race showed the importance of every runner in the event. Leisha Jones was selected to fill out the roster as our 7th runner. Her strong race moved her into our 6th finished allowing us to edge Fremont for 3rd place as Leisha was the tiebreaker. Davis and Weber finished in the top-two spots and will probably be in the top-three at State. Sharlie Dimick continued her weekly improvement and placed 12th as our top finisher running 19:41. Lindsey Bailey (21:08), Rachel Markham (21:10) and Erin Kibler (21:11) placed 19th, 20th and 21st while running great races. Shelby Cadwell had a great race to finish 23rd in 21:35. Along with Leisha’s 26th place finish in 21:57, our top six had their best races of the year.
The Boys Varsity also relied on a tight pack to finish 2nd. Brandon Yardley (16:17), Jaxon Hansen (16:21), Landon Greenhalgh (16:27), Mike Russell (16:30) and Parker Greenhalgh (16:30) gave our top five a 13-second split while placing 8th, 9th, 10th, 12th and 13th. Jeff Michel (14th, 16:38) and Frank Owens (19th, 16:53) completed the great TEAM finish. The average times for our top-five (16:25) were the best ever for a Titan TEAM by 19 seconds. If we can get another 36-second TEAM split at State, we have a shot at placing very high.
The Girls JV Katrina Dunlap (22:22), Adriana McFarland (22:23) and Kayla Berryman (22:31) finished in the 8th, 9th and 10th scoring spots to lead the Lady Titans. Lauren Busby (13th, 23:12), Katelyn Davidson (15th, 23:44), Becca Jacobsen (16th, 24:09) and Nicole Lavely (17th, 24:10) had their best races of the year to lead the 2nd place finish. In the last two weeks, Lauren has improved her 3-mile PR by 2 ½ minutes!!!
Cody Kelley led the Boys JV turning in a time of 17:22 to finish 9th in the scoring results. Spencer Griffin (12th, 17:50), Jeff Knighton (15th, 18:12), Jeff Reed (22nd, 18:41) and Nathan Seffker (25th, 18:53) rounded out the scoring. As in the other races, most had their seasonal PR’s for a three mile race.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Chosen as Athletes of the Week were Leisha Jones, Shelby Cadwell, Lauren Busby, Jared Godfrey, Spencer Griffin and Spencer Hull.
STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
State will be a great experience for all Titans. It’s great to have both TEAMS qualified and ready to compete against the best. The workouts have been planned so everyone should be primed for their best race of the year.
Davis High is the favorite to capture the Girls state title. Lehi and Alta will probably battle for 2nd. With the top-16 teams competing, a top ten finish by the Lady Titans would be a great accomplishment.
The Boys race could be epic. American Fork is currently ranked #2 in the nation and Davis #6. It should be a great battle. Third is up for grabs. Bingham, Alta, and with a great race, the Titans could contend.
Everyone will be excused Wednesday at 11:45. The bus will leave at 12:00. Bring your lunch- you won’t have a chance to eat at school. The Girls will run at 2:30, the Boys at 4:00. The course will be basically the same as the Highland Invitational for the first 2.75 miles with the finish on the Highland High track. A map can be found at:
http://www.uhsaa.org/bxcountry/coursemap.pdf
Driving directions: From I-15, take I-80 eastbound. Take the 13th East exit and turn left (north). Turn right (east) on 21st South. Turn left (south) into the park. Parking is scarce- allow plenty of time.

XC Update - October 9, 2011
SAD NEWS
It’s with a great deal of sadness that I report the passing of Bob Williams. His year-long painful struggle with cancer came to a conclusion this morning. In the summer of 2007, the Titan Cross Country program got it’s start. Bob, Tami and Preston were there from the beginning. In fact, the Highland Invitational this year was the first meet that Preston was not a part of the TEAM. There have been no better supporters of the program than the Williams family. We will try to return some of that support by dedicating the remainder of the season to the family, and keeping them in our thoughts and prayers. I will relay viewing and funeral information when it is finalized.
Thanks to all who supported “What About Bob” Saturday. It was nice to see such great support for a great family.
OPEN REGION @ DAVIS
It was good to run a race with some challenges from the weather. Who knows what the weather may be like at Region and State? All Titans responded well- even those who perhaps weren’t quite prepared for the rain, cold and wind.
With all of the Region One teams competing, the Lady Titans finished 3rd behind Davis and Weber. They followed the race plan well by running a very conservative (some would say slow) first mile and then picking it up for the final two miles. Every girl had their fastest time of the year for a three-mile course. Sharlie Dimick, Cheyna Field, Erin Kibler, Lindsey Bailey and Rachel Markham finished between 20:18 and 21:41 to lead the Lady Titans.
The Boys were equally impressive in finishing 2nd to Davis. Our top seven of Brandon Yardley, Jaxon Hansen, Mike Russell, Parker Greenhalgh, Landon Greenhalgh and Frank Owens had an incredible 36-second split, probably our best ever. Following the same race plan as the girls, the boys ran a very conservative first mile and then turned it on for miles two and three. All but three had their fastest three-mile times for the season.
This meet was a good tuneup for Region. Now we just have to run the same strong second and third miles as Wednesday, but go out more aggressively the first mile.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Selected as the Athletes of the Week were Katrina Dunlap and Mike Russell. Mike has consistently been in our top five and Katrina is improving every week.
CONGRATS JEFF KNIGHTON
Jeff was just announced as a member of the Academic All-State Team. Congratulations!! This is a great honor.
REGION ONE CHAMPIONSHIPS
It’s here!! For many, this is what you have been training for over the last year. The miles have been put in, the “little things” taken care of, and now it’s just a matter of preparing mentally for a great race Wednesday.
The top four teams qualify for State. Davis is easily the favorite to capture both titles- but if they should stumble a little, we need to be in position to challenge them.
The schedule for the meet is as follows:
1:15 - excused from class
1:30 - bus leaves
3:00 - Girls Junior Varsity
3:30 - Boys Junior Varsity
4:00 - Girls Varsity
4:30 - Boys Varsity
5:15 - Awards Ceremony
The top-10 Varsity and Junior Varsity receive awards. Hopefully, the Titans will bring some home.
STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
State will be October 19th at Sugarhouse Park. Assuming we make it there, the Girls will run at 2:30, the Boys at 4:00 pm.
FOOT LOCKER
We are close to having enough committed to go ahead with planning the trip. If you haven’t turned in your permission slip and will be able to go, let me know ASAP.
RACE FOR GRACE
We will plan on supporting this fund raiser Saturday. The run begins at Jensen Park at 4:00 pm. Registration is online at: www.active.com. A carnival with games, raffles, booths, etc., will also be held in conjunction with the race.
UPCOMING DATES
Wed, Oct 12 - Region Championships @ Layton
Sat, Oct 15 - STATE TEAM workout @ TBA
Sat, Oct 15 - Race for Grace @ Jensen Park - 4:00 pm
Wed, Oct 19 - STATE Championships @ Sugarhouse Park
