XC Update - October 9, 2011

SAD NEWS
It’s with a great deal of sadness that I report the passing of Bob Williams. His year-long painful struggle with cancer came to a conclusion this morning. In the summer of 2007, the Titan Cross Country program got it’s start. Bob, Tami and Preston were there from the beginning. In fact, the Highland Invitational this year was the first meet that Preston was not a part of the TEAM. There have been no better supporters of the program than the Williams family. We will try to return some of that support by dedicating the remainder of the season to the family, and keeping them in our thoughts and prayers. I will relay viewing and funeral information when it is finalized.
Thanks to all who supported “What About Bob” Saturday. It was nice to see such great support for a great family.

OPEN REGION @ DAVIS
It was good to run a race with some challenges from the weather. Who knows what the weather may be like at Region and State? All Titans responded well- even those who perhaps weren’t quite prepared for the rain, cold and wind.
With all of the Region One teams competing, the Lady Titans finished 3rd behind Davis and Weber. They followed the race plan well by running a very conservative (some would say slow) first mile and then picking it up for the final two miles. Every girl had their fastest time of the year for a three-mile course. Sharlie Dimick, Cheyna Field, Erin Kibler, Lindsey Bailey and Rachel Markham finished between 20:18 and 21:41 to lead the Lady Titans.
The Boys were equally impressive in finishing 2nd to Davis. Our top seven of Brandon Yardley, Jaxon Hansen, Mike Russell, Parker Greenhalgh, Landon Greenhalgh and Frank Owens had an incredible 36-second split, probably our best ever. Following the same race plan as the girls, the boys ran a very conservative first mile and then turned it on for miles two and three. All but three had their fastest three-mile times for the season.
This meet was a good tuneup for Region. Now we just have to run the same strong second and third miles as Wednesday, but go out more aggressively the first mile.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Selected as the Athletes of the Week were Katrina Dunlap and Mike Russell. Mike has consistently been in our top five and Katrina is improving every week.

CONGRATS JEFF KNIGHTON
Jeff was just announced as a member of the Academic All-State Team. Congratulations!! This is a great honor.

REGION ONE CHAMPIONSHIPS
It’s here!! For many, this is what you have been training for over the last year. The miles have been put in, the “little things” taken care of, and now it’s just a matter of preparing mentally for a great race Wednesday.
The top four teams qualify for State. Davis is easily the favorite to capture both titles- but if they should stumble a little, we need to be in position to challenge them.
The schedule for the meet is as follows:
1:15 - excused from class
1:30 - bus leaves
3:00 - Girls Junior Varsity
3:30 - Boys Junior Varsity
4:00 - Girls Varsity
4:30 - Boys Varsity
5:15 - Awards Ceremony
The top-10 Varsity and Junior Varsity receive awards. Hopefully, the Titans will bring some home.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
State will be October 19th at Sugarhouse Park. Assuming we make it there, the Girls will run at 2:30, the Boys at 4:00 pm.

FOOT LOCKER
We are close to having enough committed to go ahead with planning the trip. If you haven’t turned in your permission slip and will be able to go, let me know ASAP.

RACE FOR GRACE
We will plan on supporting this fund raiser Saturday. The run begins at Jensen Park at 4:00 pm. Registration is online at: www.active.com. A carnival with games, raffles, booths, etc., will also be held in conjunction with the race.
