XC Update - October 2, 2011

Titan Cross Country Update - Oct 2, 2011

TEN DAYS UNTIL REGION
TAKE CARE OF THE “LITTLE THINGS”!! Most of you have been training hard for several months. The bulk of the miles have been run, most of the training completed. In the last days of our season, make sure you do not neglect the “little things”. You can’t do much to improve your cardiovascular fitness at this stage of the game, but you can make sure you are eating right, getting your sleep, staying hydrated, taking care of little injuries, etc. This can make a huge difference to your individual performance as well as that of the TEAM as we approach the final stages of the season. Do not let yourself or your TEAMmates down!!

CONGRATS COACH WILCOX
3:15:25 for the St. George Marathon!! That put him in the top 7% of all race finishers. Great job, Coach!!

OPEN REGION @ SYRACUSE
The Titans ran well at the only meet held on our home course this year. With all of the Region One schools competing, the Boys finished 1st and the Girls 3rd. Even though Davis held out some of their top runners, it was still a very good performance by both TEAMS.
Sharlie Dimick continued to improve as she ran a strong, determined race to finish 3rd. Her time was 20:38 over the tough 3.0 mile course. Cheyna Field, Rachel Markham, Lindsey Bailey and Erin Kibler finished within 23-seconds of each other to ensure the 3rd-place TEAM finish.
Brandon Yardley pretty much led from the start to win the Boys race running 16:38. He was close to the course record set by Austin Costley in 2009. Jaxon Hansen, Parker Greenhalgh, Jeff Michel, Landon Greenhalgh, Frank Owens and Mike Russell finished in the top-11 to give the Titans 21 points. Weber was a distant 2nd with 58 and Davis 3rd with 70.

TITAN INTRASQUAD “INVITATIONAL”
This 2-mile race on the track was a good way to replace a weekend meet. The Titans were able to get in a quick race and still make it to breakfast with their homecoming dates. It provided a very timely speed workout- a good start to final preparations for the Region Championships in 10 days.
Jaxon Hansen ran a quick 10:16 and Brandon Yardley 10:19, both coming within a couple seconds of their PR’s set last spring when they were training for track. Mike Russell, Landon and Parker Greenhalgh were also under 11:00. Five under 11:00 matches our total for the 2011 outdoor season.
Sharlie Dimick, Cheyna Field, Erin Kibler, Lindsey Bailey and Rachel Markham were all under 14:00. Last spring we only had four under that time during the track season. Katrina Dunlap, Leisha Jones, Kayla Berryman, Shelby Cadwell and Mallory Ashby were also under 15-minutes and Adriana McFarland, Katelyn Davidson and Becca Jacobsen just barely missed the barrier.
This was a fun, quick, competitive event- may be a tradition in the making.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Selected as the Athletes of the Week were Katelyn Davidson, Jaycie Smith, Landon Greenhalgh and Parker Greenhalgh. All four can be characterized as dedicated, hard-working, and committed to the success of the TEAM. AND, Coach Wilcox!! No explanation needed.

OPEN REGION AT DAVIS
Our only meet this week will be Wednesday at Barnes Park in Kaysville. I haven’t received finally information, but I anticipate that all Region One teams will be there and that the races will start at 3:45 pm. The park is located on 2nd north in Kaysville, about ½ mile west of I-15. This will be our final tuneup before the Region One Championships. You will be excused from class at 1:45, the bus will leave at 2:00.

FOOT LOCKER
I’ve attached the detailed information concerning the trip to California in December for the Foot Locker Western Regional Cross Country Championships. Because of dramatic increases in bus and hotel costs, the cost will probably be about $200. I need to get reservations secured soon, and also figure out how many athletes from other schools I can invite. Thus it is important that I get the permission slips returned by this Friday if you plan on going. We can look at some fund raisers to help defray the costs.

WORTHY CAUSES
There are a couple worthy causes we would like to call to your attention.
Last year, Bob Williams, Preston’s Dad, was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer. It has since spread to his liver and lungs. Bob has been unable to work many hours, and the high costs of the treatments are not covered 100% by insurance. A run/walk and other activities are scheduled Saturday, October 8th to raise money to help defray the cost of the treatments. As a TEAM, we will look at participating in the run at 7:30 am at Syracuse High before our workout at Layton. More information concerning all of the events can be found at: http://www.bobandtami.blogspot.com/
The other worthy cause involves Taylee Hamblin’s nine year-old cousin, Gracie Kaye Hinds. She has been in the Primary Children’s Hospital for over a month with brain / seizure problems. She is being kept in a coma to control the seizures, and so far the doctors do not know what is causing them. Striders Running Store is sponsoring a run/walk October 15th at Jensen Park. There will also be a carnival with games, raffles, booths, etc., set up to raise money for the family. The run will begin at 4:00 pm with the carnival to follow. Registration for the Race for Grace Run can be made at: www.active.com.
As a TEAM, we will make some plans on how to support both worthy causes.

ALUMNI
Hannah Williams was USU’s #1 finisher at the prestigious Norte Dame Invitational Friday. She ran 18:06 over the tough 5k course to finish 86th out of 225 in the race. Jared Ward, honorary alum, ran 24:03 over the 8000 meter course at the same meet to finish 4th, leading BYU to the team title. Jake Rossmango’s 28:21 put him in the 173rd scoring spot out of 321 competitors at the Oklahoma State Classic. He is doing a great job to hold on to a varsity spot at TCU.
