Titan XC Update - Aug 31, 2009
GRASS RELAYS
The Titans turned in some outstanding performances at the Grass Relays at American Fork High Saturday. In the Girls Varsity race, Hannah Williams ran 12:30 to finish 4th overall against most of the top girls in the state. She would have been 3rd and possibly 2nd had she not been maliciously tripped by an angry bale of hay. Taylee Hamblin (13:56), Abby Rich (14:22), Kiana Tebbs (14:12) and Lindsey McFarland (14:28) ran great races to help the ladies finish 8th out of 30 teams in the varsity race. Mikelann Wilcox turned in a great race running 13:49 to finish 4th in the Girls JV competition.
In the Boys Varsity, Jake Rossmango turned in the top performance running 10:57 to finish 16th overall, just 3-seconds out of the medals. Preston Williams (11:25), Jaxon Hansen (11:58), Kyle Kelly (11:58) and Weston Atkins (12:00) had solid performances to help us place 15th overall. Brandon Yardley turned in an outstanding performance running 11:42 to place 8th in the JV race.
Overall, it was a great meet after a hot, hard week of workouts. It was a real good meet for many first-time competitors. As coaches, we were very impressed with your efforts.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Chosen as the first Athletes of the Week were are Hannah Williams and Jake Rossmango. They both showed that they are prepared to hold their own against the best in the state. Hannah was leading the #1 runners until the bale of hay bit her and Jake moved up from about 25th to 5th in the last mile of his leg. Great job by both athletes.

XC Update - Aug 16, 2009
“You can’t be a champion two hours a day and a chump the other 22 hours a day.” In other words, start taking care of the “little” things like sleep, nutrition, abs, etc. START NOW!! Don’t wait until the week before Region!!!
NOTE ON WORKOUT TIMES THIS WEEK: Same times and places as last week. We will run trails Monday in the morning, the Tuesday workout at Steed Park and Thursday workout at Jensen Park will be at 7:00 pm.
GOOD EFFORTS AT THE 18th DART CHALLENGE
Several Titans turned in good performances at the Dart Challenge 5K Saturday. Hannah Williams ran a great race to finish as the 2nd place high school runner. Her time was 19:19 and will put her in the top-15 performers on the races All-Time List. Our next finishers were pretty closely bunched. Mikelann Wilcox (23:24), Taylee Hamblin (23:25), Shelby Cadwell (23:57), Kianna Tebbs (24:03), Lindsay McFarland (24:09), Haley Busby (24:49) and Sasha Russell (25:26) were the other Lady Titans that ran the race. Hannah’s time was 40 seconds faster than last year, Mikelann’s 15 faster, and Sasha’s 2:06 faster!!! Great job Sasha. Maybe we won’t be spending as much time on hurdles this fall. Now, while grouping is a good thing in Cross Country, we need to get the entire group to narrow the gap and get closer to Hannah.
For the boys, Austin Costley ran 16:26 to place 3rd among high school runners. The time will put him in the top-30 on the All-Time list for the race. Jake Rossmango’s 16:42 was 2:42 faster than he ran last year and will put him in the top-50 on the list. Preston Williams ran 17:36, 41-seconds better than 2008. Brandon Yardley beat last years time by 1:18 to finish in 18:16. Dylan Rossmango finished in 21:27, 1:04 better than last year. Our other finishers were Tom Hill (20:39) and Julian Alvarez (20:47).
Great job by Mrs. Yardley as she placed 3rd in her age group running 27:39.

XC Update - August 2
GREAT HIGH ALTITUDE CAMP
This was the 12th year I’ve taken athletes to the Uintah’s for the High Altitude Camp. And it was the best ever in most respects. This was due to two big factors: The efforts of Coach and Stacie Wilcox and Frank Kelly, and the great behavior of the entire TEAM. The meals were great, the help preparing them and cleaning up was great, and the efforts in the workouts were great. Some of the highlights:
#1. Rob, Stacie and Frank doing all of the shopping, organization, and preparing great meals!!!!
#2. Kyle, Austin and Jake working their butts off about every minute they weren’t running. The workouts were probably easier than the work they put into making the camp run smooth.
#3. Rob and Taylee hobbling the entire 23 miles to and from Red Castle.
#4. Austin and Jake making it to Red Castle in just under two miles.
#5. Everyone who started the Red Castle run/hike making it to the top.
#6. Great efforts on the two toughest workouts (excluding Red Castle)- the 8 x 800's with a 400 jog and the Bridger Lake Run.
#7. The “kamikaze’s” on the rope swing- we were lucky to only have a couple injuries to Rob and Preston.
#8. A great week of training and getting to know each other better.
A huge thanks to the Wilcox’s, Mr. Kelly and the Yardley’s for their help at the camp. Also to Mr. Peterson and Mrs. Larson for the transportation. And thanks to all Titans for making it a great week. Your hard work and cooperation was greatly appreciated. The unanimous choices for the Camp MVP’s (those who did the most to ensure the success of the camp) were no-brainers with Rob, Stacie and Frank as well as Jake, Kyle and Austin. In your voting for others that did the most to help make the camp a success, the winners were Hannah and Preston.
TEAM WORKOUT THIS WEEK
Monday: Trails- meet at the school at 6:30 am or at Fernwood Campground at 7:00 am.
Tuesday: I had put “Hills” at “TBA”. We will meet at the school at 7:00 am- we got in enough hills last week. The workout will be a Fartlek Run- distance TBA.
Thursday: Meet at Jensen Park at 7:00 am.
TRAILS AUGUST 10th
We may meet at the south end of the trails on Monday, August 10th. We are considering a little trail race with Davis- just for fun- with a breakfast after the race/workout. It could be a fun event. I’ll keep you posted.

BAD NEWS, GOOD NEWS
The bad news: Coach Smith is going to take a job at Northridge. He will be the head Cross Country and Track and Field coach. The bad news is that he is leaving Syracuse. The good news is that it will be a great opportunity for him. He will have a teaching schedule that is better suited for him, he is from the community, and his kids will be going to Northridge in a few years. He did a great job at Syracuse and we will all miss him a great deal. But it’s a great move for him and also for Northridge. If you would like to tell him thanks and wish him luck, his email address is: rismith@dsdmail.net.
