Foot Locker Update

What a great trip!!! It’s hard to imagine how this can be said when almost 50% of the 70-hour trip was spent on a bus. But even that part of the trip was fun. Here is a re-cap for those who didn’t go.

PRE-RACE
We left Thursday night about 7:00 pm and drove pretty much straight through (except for a couple potty breaks) to California. After breakfast at Denny’s, we went to Mt. San Antonio College to run the course and get registration taken care of. Then our great bus driver, Ken, took us to Newport Beach for a couple hours in the sun and surf. The weather was perfect for December. After convincing Kiana that she couldn’t jump in and ride the sea lion, we left Newport for our hotel in Diamond Bar. After a frustrating 45-minute check-in process, most went their separate ways to get dinner and kick back before an early “hit the sack” curfew.

RACE-DAY
The 5:00 am Saturday morning wake up call was not great with a great deal of enthusiasm. However, following a light breakfast, we boarded the bus (following an equally frustrating check-out process) and traveled to the course. Most of the morning was chilly and overcast with the coastal fog keeping the temperature perfect for runners but not ideal for spectators. The races got underway at 7:10 and continued until about 11:30. I’m listing the results of each race with the number of competitors, place and time for all of the Titans and our other traveling mates from Weber, Highland and former/future Davis runners. All races were run over the famous Mt. SAC course. It is a very challenging course with several tough hills. The 7th/8th Grade race was 2 miles, all others were 5000 meters.

RACES HIGHLIGHTS
There were several great efforts turned in by our “Bus TEAM”. Sharlie Dimick ran great to finish as the 8th girl in the 7th/8th grade race. Jared Ward won the Coach/Supporter race. He is the only Davis High runner to ever qualify for Foot Locker Nationals (2006). His time of 15:47 would have won him a return trip to nationals. Not bad considering he was still on his mission about three months ago. Coach Wilcox ran great to finish in 21:21. Taylee Hamblin was running on a stress fracture and still finished 9th in the Junior Girls race. Ally Deeter (Weber) ran a great race to finish 4th in the Senior Girls race. Karlee Deeter (also Weber) placed 5th in the All West Fr/Soph Girls race. Kate Stringfellow placed 49th in the Seeded Girls race. She had the 5th fastest time for a Utah girl. Austin Costley was 58th in the Seeded Boys and was Utah’s #4 finisher. Jake Rossmango was 84th and was Utah’s #6 finisher.
There were many other highlights and some disappointments. Julian Alvarez and Hannah Williams couldn’t overcome injuries to run the races they had hoped for. I couldn’t overcome 20 pounds, 40 years and no talent to catch Jared in the Supporters race. However, I suffered for 8 ½ minutes more than Jared did. Several ran with limited quality training as they were trying to re-hab injuries. Nevertheless, the efforts by everyone competing were still there. You should all feel proud- only about 5% of Americans could even walk up the Switchbacks.

POST-RACE
As soon as the races were finished, it was off to Las Vegas and the Hampton Inn with a brief stop in Barstow to catch a bite. Following a much quicker check-in, the entire crew made the trek to New York / New York. This was the starting point for a few hours on the strip. Most rode the coaster, checked out a few of the shops, and were ready to return to the hotel long before the 11:30 deadline. It was a peaceful night at the hotel, at least in my room. Following an early wake-up and quick breakfast, it was back on the bus for the final leg of the journey. There was only one pit stop in Cedar City to eat- other than that, it was clear sailing. By 5:00 pm, we were back in Syracuse ready for Kyle, Austin and Jake to clean the bus. It was really nice to be greeted by snow and 20 degree air after suffering through the sunny, 65 degree conditions at the beach.

THANKS
Thanks to everyone that went for making it an enjoyable trip. Thanks to Coach and Mrs. Wilcox for their help. It’s great to have that type of support. Thanks to Jared for coming along. He is a great role model and an invaluable source of information that can help everyone become a better runner/person. AND, most importantly, thanks to all athletes for your cooperation and help in making the trip successful. The bus driver said it was the best group of young people he has ever driven. I agree. I hope you had as good a time as I did. There are only a couple things that need to change next year: More Titans on board, a different motel in California, and no coaches over 60 running the race. If those things happen, Foot Locker 2010 can be better than 2009!!!

XC Update - October 25

Titan XC Update - Oct 25, 2009

GREAT STATE MEET FOR THE TITANS
The regular season came to an end in great fashion Wednesday at Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake City. The Lady Titans had their most complete race of the year to finish 3rd while a short-handed Boys TEAM battled hard to place 9th. The finish by the Girls was the highest ever for a Lady Titan team in any sport in State Championship competition.
Hannah Williams capped off a great senior year as her 9th place finish made her a First Team All-State selection. Her time was 19:19 over the tough 3.0 mile course. Taylee Hamblin also had a great race as she placed 20th while running 20:03. Kiana Tebbs capped off a very good final two weeks as her 20:24 time was good enough to place 31st. Lindsey McFarland had her best race of the year finishing 42nd in 20:43. Mikelann Wilcox ran a strong race to place 46th in 20:52. Abby Rich placed 76th in 22:00 and Haley Busby 99th in 23:35. Contributing to a great TEAM finish by these two seniors was a good way to end their Cross Country careers. In the TEAM race, the Lady Titan finished behind American Fork and Davis.
Austin Costley and Jake Rossmango ran very patient races moving up from about 30th place with a mile to go to finish in 9th and 12th. Austin’s time was 15:59 and earned him First Team All-State honors. Jake just missed out on All-State with his outstanding 16:08 time. Brandon Yardley (68th, 17:20), Jaxon Hansen (76th, 17:26), Tyrell Pearce (77th, 17:26) and Kyle Kelly (85th, 17:43) ran strong races over the tough course. Steven Wilcox capped off his career with a great memory by running in the State Championships. He finished 108th in 18:26. Steve was one of the few “original Titans” meeting on the trails three months before the school opened. Running at State was a fitting climax.
The meet was a great way to finish off an outstanding season. Many athletes worked extremely hard over the last 12 months and the efforts paid off with some outstanding results. Hopefully, the same commitment with greater numbers will keep the program improving next year.
Complete results for State can be found at: www.runnercard.com.

FOOT LOCKER
It looks to be about 90% certain that we will take a bus to Foot Locker. It’s a great meet and great trip. It would be nice to have our entire TEAM make the trip. We will make sure we keep the cost at $150 per person. More information will be sent out soon.

COMING UP
Ultimate Frisbee- The Titans will take on Davis XC in an Ultimate Frisbee game Tuesday. Game time is 3:15- or there abouts. I think the Titans will humble the Darts.
TEAM Banquet- Our banquet will be held at Golden Corral November 11th at 6:00 pm. Parents are invited. The cost will be $10.00 per person. We will get final numbers attending in a couple weeks

RIGHT NOW
We need to start now if we want to keep the program moving upward. Now is the time to increase mileage but decrease intensity. LET’S KEEP THE PROGRAM MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION!!!

XC Update - Oct 18

Titan XC Update - Oct 18, 2009

THANKS
A big thanks to so many who helped make the Region One Championships a success. Thanks to the parents who helped and supported, especially Bill Wilcox. He not only took care of the finish area, but he and Julie fed the kids the night before the meet. Thanks to Paul Murray for his help as the starter and finish judge. Rob and Stacie Wilcox covered about ½ of the jobs that needed to be taken care of. John Merrill and the student body officers and advisors were great. John provided the sound system that added a great deal to the meet. A huge thanks to the administration for their support and help with the awards. In over 30 years of coaching, I’ve never had a more supportive administration. Kelsey Westbroeke’s typing skills saved many hours of work. It was great to see so many students, parents, etc., out on the course supporting the TEAM. And finally, thanks to a great group of kids who not only put forth an outstanding effort on the course, but were also great in helping set up the course, officiate, and take clean up after the meet was over. You run your guts out, then get to run the course again to pick everything up. Bottom line: Thanks to everyone for helping make Region Championships a very successful meet.

TITANS FINISH SECOND IN REGION
For the second year in a row, both Boys and Girls TEAMS finished 2nd behind Davis High at the Region One Championships. From top to bottom, the nine-team region is probably the toughest in the state. To place that high took some great efforts from the entire TEAM. Over ½ of those running had their fastest mile average of the year, even when compared to the shorter courses. The efforts over the wet, 3-mile course were outstanding.
As usual, Hannah Williams led the Girls efforts. She ran a tough race to finish 3rd in 19:16. She was just behind Davis High’s Meghan Hedquist and Jessie Wilding. Taylee Hamblin moved up several places over the last mile to place 9th while running 19:45. Hannah and Taylee made the All-Region Team with their efforts. Kiana Tebbs had her best race of the year running 20:12 to place 15th. Mikelann Wilcox (18th, 20:27), Lindsey McFarland (22nd, 21:01), Shelby Cadwell (24th, 21:04) and Abby Rich (30th, 21:47) all ran strong races to help out the TEAM effort. While Davis easily won the meet, the Lady Titans had to run well to finish with 67 points, comfortably ahead of Fremont (96), Weber (101), and Viewmont (104).
The Boys race was equally impressive as the Titans finished with 75 points to outdistance rivals Weber (88), Viewmont (130) and Clearfield (149). The leaders were tightly packed over the first mile. Then Jake Rossmango made a bold “Prefontaine” move to forge a 10-second gap over the pack. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to hold the lead and finished 2nd to Davis’ Logan Petty. Jake’s time was 16:08- a gutsy performance to say the least. Austin Costley did not have his best race of the year but still finished 4th in 16:16. Not bad- have a “bad race” (his evaluation) and still finish 4th in a tough region. Both Jake and Austin were named to the All-Region Team. Preston Williams finished 21st in 17:07. This was 20-seconds slower than last year. Bad performance? NO WAY!! He found out the next day that he was running on a stress fracture in his lower leg. Just finishing was an incredible performance. He will miss State and be in a boot for a few weeks. Luckily, Jaxon Hansen (23rd, 17:08), Tyrell Pearce (25th, 17:13), Brandon Yardley (26th, 17:15) and Kyle Kelly (29th, 17:20) ran strong races to take up the slack. Without their strong efforts, Weber would have easily caught us.
Daylyn Johnston ran great in the Girls Junior Varsity race. She finished 11th in 22:12. Her time was good enough to have run varsity for any TEAM except Davis and Syracuse. Sasha Russell (21st, 21:09) and Haley Busby (23rd, 23:16) ran their best races of the year. Jessica Tomlinson, told by her Dr. not to run, didn’t listen and ran very strong to finish 36th in 24:42. Cambria Bitter (25:58) and Mckenna Peterson (27:47) had strong races to finish off the year.
Steve Wilcox had his best race of the year in the Boys Junior Varsity as he ran 18:04 to finish 18th. Dylan Rossmango had by far his best race of the season running 18:19 to place 24th. Matt Clough was just one spot behind finishing in 18:20. Weston Atkins, not on top of his game, ran very tough to place 30th in 18:29. Frank Owens (34th, 18:35), Brandon Hansen (36th, 18:37) and Parker Williams (43rd, 18:47) finished strong to help the Titan JV TEAM place 3rd. Thomas Hill (63rd, 19:02) and Julian Alvarez (64th, 19:03) paced each other to strong races. Grant Patterson (94th, 20:07), Lance Gossett (96th, 20:16), Spencer Griffin (111th, 20:58), Josh Flores (123rd, 21:36), and Gregg Marchant (140th, 22:51) ran very well to finish out their regular season. Complete results can be found at: www.titanxc09.blogspot.com.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Selected as the Athletes of the Week were Kiana Tebbs, who had her best race of the year at Region (but has a better one coming up) and Steve Wilcox, who also had a great race and earned a spot on the State Championship squad.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!!
The State Championships will take place Wednesday at Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake. Directions: take I-15 south to I-80 east. Go east on I-80 then take the 13th east exit. Go north to 21st south. You can’t miss the park. Give yourself plenty of time to find parking- it is scarce. If you would like a map and information concerning the meet, go to the following link: http://www.uhsaa.org/bxcountry/2009/stateinfo.pdf The Girls are scheduled to run at 3:30, the Boys at 4:00. Athletes: You will be excused at 12:15 and the bus will leave at 12:30.
What to look for: In the Girls race, Davis should battle American Fork for the title. There are several teams that will be close for 3rd through about 8th. The Lady Titans should be one of those teams. For us to crack the top-5, we probably will need our first five to finish in the top-40. Individually, Davis’ Meghan Hedquist and Jessie Wilding, a couple girls from American Fork and our own Hannah Williams should compete for the top spots. And look for a rapidly improving Taylee Hamblin to be close to the top 10-15.
American Fork (ranked #12 in the nation) is easily the favorite in the boys team race. Davis should finish 2nd. Four other teams (Hillcrest, Pleasant Grove, Bingham and Alta) are ranked in the top-20 in the Southwest Region of the U.S. Skyline is also running very well. Cracking into the top-6 will take a supreme effort by the Titans. If we can get our top five to finish in the top-50, we have a shot at placing high. Individually, American Fork has three top runners along with one from Lone Peak and Alta. Our region has four-five who should battle for the top spots. And that list includes Jake Rossmango and Austin Costley. Both should compete for top-10 finishes.
State will be exciting. As far as Cross Country goes, it will be the last “hurrah” for some great seniors. They deserve to go out in a blaze of glory. Coaches prediction: The months of training, dedication and sacrifice will pay off in the best TEAM performance of the year. Knowing that you have prepared very well and have the support of your TEAM will give you the energy and confidence to run your best at State. GOOD LUCK!!!

PICTURE RETAKE
Due to some “technical difficulties”, we will re-take TEAM pictures Friday after school. Have your uniforms with you, cleaned, ready to turn in.

XC Update - Oct 11

Titan XC Update - Oct 11, 2009

OPEN REGION @ SYRACUSE
The Titans hosted their first ever Cross Country meet Wednesday. By all standards, it was a huge success. Even though the times may not have been what was hoped for, the efforts were very good. The slower times were because of the tough course and the effects of the hard workout on Monday. But the competitiveness and desire were great. The meet was also a success because of the help from so many parents and athletes that helped set up, officiate, and clean up after the meet.
Hannah Williams had another great meet placing 2nd. She ran 19:25 for the tough 3-mile course. Taylee Hamblin finished 13th overall in 20:58 even though she had been sick most of the last week. Mikelann Wilcox (17th, 21:26), Shelby Cadwell (20th, 21:44), Abby Rich (21st, 21:49) Lindsey McFarland (22nd, 21:54) and Kiana Tebbs (25th, 21:59) had good grouping to help ensure the 2nd place TEAM finish by the Lady Titans. Daylyn Johnston continued her improvement running 23:10 in the Varsity race. Eight schools fielded teams in the race. Davis finished first with 31 points with Syracuse 2nd scoring 73. Weber (85), Viewmont (91) and Fremont (93) were close behind.
Haley Busby hung with the leaders for most of the JV race before finishing 6th in 23:38. Sasha Russell ran 24:47 to place 16th. Cambria Bitter ran very well for her first ever XC race running 28:18. Mckenna Peterson finished in 29:17.
Austin Costley ran great, taking the lead early, pushing the pace, and holding on for the victory in the Varsity Boys race. His time was 16:22 over the 3-mile course. Jake Rossmango ran very well finishing 6th in 16:45. Tyrell Pearce (19th, 17:44), Brandon Yardley (22nd, 17:47), Jaxon Hansen (24th, 17:50) and Kyle Kelly (27th, 17:55) ran fairly tight to help the Titan cause. Preston Williams, battling the flu, ran 18:08. Weston Atkins (18:42), Steve Wilcox (18:45) and Brandon Hansen (19:19) completed the Varsity squad. Davis won the Varsity Boys with 25 points. Weber was 2nd with 68, closely followed by the Titans with 72. Viewmont (92), Northridge (141), Fremont (166) and Roy (182) completed the team scoring.
Frank Owens continued his great improvement as he ran 19:18 to place 16th in the JV race. Dylan Rossmango (19:33), Julian Alvarez (19:40), Thomas Hill (19:42) also ran well to finish in the top 30. Parker Williams (20:01), Lance Gossett (21:13), Spencer Griffin (22:01), Josh Flores (22:53) and Gregg Marchant (23:30) also ran strong races in the JV competition. Complete results can be found at: www.titanxc09.blogspot.com.
Overall, it was a good tuneup for the Region Championships.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Selected as Athletes of the Week were Mckenna Peterson, Lindsey McFarland, Weston Atkins, and Josh Flores. While neither Mckenna or Josh place real high in their races, they both demonstrate the qualities that help build strong programs: never miss practices (I doubt they have missed five combined since June 1st), never complain, work their hardest, strive to improve. They are more important to the success of the TEAM than they realize. Lindsey and Weston have done a great job in helping the TEAM all year long. Both will be big factors in our Region success.

REGION CHAMPIONSHIPS
These next two weeks are what many have been shooting for since last October. A great amount of work has been done, the mileage put in, and the preparation completed. Whatever the outcome, the journey has been challenging and rewarding.
What to look for Wednesday: Realistically, Davis is the odds on favorite to again take home both trophies. While we would love to upset them, our #1 goal is to make sure we place in the top-5 teams and make it to State. The next realistic goal would be to capture 2nd. On paper, the Lady Titans should battle Weber, Viewmont and Fremont for 2nd place. It should be a close race. For the Boys, it should come down to the Titans and Weber for 2nd. Whichever TEAM can get the best grouping of the 3-6 runners will probably “win” 2nd. And the ultimate goal would be to have great races from every athlete and be in position to win the titles if Davis falters.
Individually, Hannah Williams and Davis’ Meghan Hedquist and Jessie Wilding have dominated the region. Those three should push the pace again and any of the three could win. On the Boys side, Austin Costley has run tough all year. His main competition for the individual title should come from Jake Rossmango, Davis’ Logan Petty, Brad Nye and Jeff Taylor, Weber’s Russ Carnahan and Layton’s Tyson Butler.
It should be a great meet.

FOOT LOCKER INFORMATION
Don’t forget to get your Foot Locker info back by Tuesday. It would be great if we had so many that wanted to go that we needed to charter a bus.

XC Update - Oct 4

Titan XC Update - Oct 4, 2009

OPEN REGION @ DAVIS
With all of the Region One schools competing except Clearfield, this meet was a fairly good indicator of where we stack up going into the final 1 ½ weeks before the Region Championships. All teams, including the Titans, seemed to be a little short-handed because of injuries and illnesses. However, we were able to finish 2nd to Davis in both Boys and Girls races.
“Queen” Hannah Williams continued to run great as she finished 2nd behind her rival from Davis, Meghan Hedquist. Her time of 17:21 over the 2.75 mile course is the #4 time ever run on the Barnes Park Course. Taylee Hamblin ran very well finishing in 18:00 to place 8th. Mikelann Wilcox continued to show improvement as her 19:07 was good enough for 15th. Lindsey McFarland (19th, 19:38) and Abby Rich (20th, 19:39) worked well together to round out the top-5 Lady Titans. Daylyn Johnston ran very well to place 29th in 20:19.
Haley Busby (21:16), Sasha Russell (22:06) and McKenna Peterson (24:46) all ran well in the J.V. race.
In the Boys Varsity, Austin Costley left the pack behind at about the 2-mile mark to finish 1st in 14:30. This was the #2 mark ever run on the course, just 3-seconds off the record. Jake Rossmango also finished very strong over the last ½ mile to finish 3rd in 14:48. That is the #4 mark ever run on the course. Tyrell Pearce (18th, 15:27), Brandon Yardley (19th, 15:28), and Kyle Kelly (26th, 16:07) made some strong moves at the end of the race that resulted in the Titans narrow 2-point margin over Weber for 2nd in the meet. Matt Clough (30th, 16:20) and Weston Atkins (42nd, 16:49) rounded out the varsity squad.
The top five scorers in the J.V. race were Brandon Hansen (18th, 16:51), Frank Owens (19th, 16:52), Thomas Hill (27th, 17:22), Parker Williams (30th, 17:32) and Steven Wilcox (32th, 17:50). Dylan Rossmango (33rd, 17:53) and Julian Alvarez (34th, 18:04) also figured in the scoring. The rest of the J.V. finishers were Grant Patterson (18:29), Josh Flores (19:51), Lance Gossett (19:51), Spencer Griffin (20:03) and Gregg Marchant (20:08).

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Selected as Athletes of the Week were: Abby Rich, who has consistently been in our top-five all year, and Austin Costley who has been our #1 runner most of the year and had a great race at Davis Wednesday.

THIS WEEK
We will host the Open Region meet Wednesday afternoon. The race times will be: 3:30- Junior Varsity Girls; 4:00- Junior Varsity Boys; 4:30- Varsity Girls; 5:00- Varsity Boys. This will be our last meet before the Region One Championships. It will help determine somewhat who will run Varsity at Region. We not only want to run well and compete hard, but also do some things that will make it a great meet for the other schools.

TEAM PICTURES
We will take TEAM pictures for the yearbook Friday after school. Make sure you have your uniform.

XC Update - Sept 28

Titan XC Update - Sept 28, 2009

CONGRATS HOMECOMING ROYALTY
The halftime of the Homecoming Football game was really special for the Titan Cross Country TEAM. Sasha Russell was a finalist for Homecoming Queen, Steve Wilcox was 2nd attendant to King, and our very own Hannah Williams was selected by the senior class as their Homecoming Queen!!! What a great, well-deserved honor. Congratulations to all three.

OPEN REGION @ ROY
Even though we were using the race at Roy as a semi-workout, both squads finished 2nd out of the seven schools competing. The strategy was to run a good 1000 meters, “coast” for 3000, then finish strong over the last 1000. In the girls race, Hannah Williams made up a 15-second deficit over the last 1000 meters to win by 10 seconds. Austin Costley also ran a strong last 1000 to move up from 10th to 5th in the Boys race. For both teams to still finish 2nd was a good outcome for the meet.

OREM INVITATIONAL
The Titans ran very well at the last big invitational of the season. With 30 teams from Utah, Colorado and Wyoming competing, the Boys finished 4th overall and the Girls were 4th in 5A and 5th overall. The Boys JV also ran well to finish 6th.
Hannah Williams had a little trouble recovering from a bad start but still managed to finish 8th overall and 2nd among 5A runners. Her time was 19:49 over the wet, slow 5000 meter course. Taylee Hamblin (21st, 21:24), Mikelann Wilcox 25th, 21:39), Shelby Cadwell (31st, 22:00), Kiana Tebbs (33rd, 22:03) and Lindsey McFarland (36th, 22:10) completed the varsity scoring.
Austin Costley ran with the leaders the entire race to finish 6th overall and 5th among 5A runners. His time was 16:46. Jake Rossmango moved up consistently throughout the race to finish 8th in 17:04. Preston Williams (17th, 17:34), Tyrell Pearce (33rd, 18:13), Matt Clough (34th, 18:17), Kyle Kelly (48th, 18:32) and Jaxon Hansen (49th, 18:39) completed the varsity squad.
In the Girls JV race, Daylyn Johnston ran a very good race, just missing a medal as she placed 11th in 23:31. Sasha Russell (37th, 25:13), Haley Busby (40th, 25:19) and Jessica Tomlinson (53rd, 25:58) ran a great last mile in passing 15-20 runners each. McKenna Petersen ran a good race to place 80th in 28:45 to round out the JV scoring.
Brandon Yardley ran great to place 4th in the 5A JV race. His time was 18:20. Tom Hill (36th, 20:07), Julian Alavarez (37th, 20:08), Dylan Rossmango (50th, 20:23), and Parker Williams (60th, 20:38) also ran well to help us 6th in the JV race.
Complete results for all races can be found at: www.runnercard.com.
As is usually the case, not everyone felt great about their races. While in some cases, the outcome may not have been what was desired, the efforts by everyone cannot be faulted. This was a good week considering the tough workouts and lack of sleep and distractions associated with Homecoming Week.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Selected as Athletes of the Week were: Daylyn Johnston, who ran great at Orem, Mikelann Wilcox, who had her best race of the year, Brandon Yardley because of his impressive performance in the Orem JV race, and Tyrell Pearce, who has been very consistent in recent weeks and will be a key to our success.

THIS WEEK
Only one meet this week. We will travel to Kaysville for an Open Region meet hosted by Davis High. The races will be run at Barnes park which is located at about 200 north, 900 west in Kaysville. I don’t know the race times yet.
We will work out over the UEA weekend. We will decide on times and sites Monday.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE
Wed, Sep 30 - Open Region Meet @ Davis
Wed, Oct 7 - Open Region Meet @ Syracuse
Wed, Oct 14 - Region Championships @ Layton Commons Park
Wed, Oct 21 - State Championships @ Sugarhouse Park

IMPORTANT!!!
There are only 2 ½ weeks until the Region One Championships. This is what many have been pointing towards for the last 11 months. It is critical that EVERYONE takes care of the “little” things: nutrition, sleep, icing, hydration, etc. If we are going to reach some TEAM goals, we need everyone to give 100%, not just in the workouts, but in all facets of the sport that determine success. DON’T LET YOUR TEAMMATES DOWN!!!

XC Update - Sept 21

Titan XC Update - Sept 21, 2009

GREAT WEEK FOR THE TITANS
The Titans had a great week that moved us closer to reaching some of the TEAM goals. The great Monday workout really got things started. 2nd place finishes behind Davis High by both Girls and Boys at the Davis Clipper Championships kept the momentum going. The week was capped off Saturday as both teams finished 4th at the Wahsatch Rendezvous Invitational. Over 25 schools had teams entered in the meet.

DAVIS CLIPPER CHAMPIONSHIPS
Hannah Williams led the Lady Titans to the 2nd place finish. She ran 17:32 over the 2.75 mile course to finish in 3rd place. Taylee Hamblin (10th, 18:49) and Mikelann Wilcox (14th, 19:11) also medaled for Syracuse. Lindsey McFarland (16th, 19:28), Shelby Cadwell (17th, 19:34), Kiana Tebbs (18th, 19:37) and Abby Rich (21st, 19:47) all ran great to complete the varsity scoring.
Jake Rossmango and Austin Costley ran very aggressively with the lead runners for the first ½ of the race. Then Jake broke away and took the lead for a mile before getting passed in the final stages. He held on to finish 2nd in a 14:42. Austin was right behind in 3rd with a time of 14:50. Preston Williams (14th, 15:34), Brandon Yardley (17th, 15:50), Kyle Kelly (20th, 15:55), Tyrell Pearce (21st, 15:58) and Matt Clough (33rd, 16:43) rounded out the varsity scorers. In the JV race, Jaxon Hansen ran a great race to finish 4th in 15:46.
Both squads ran very well and narrowed the gap between us and Davis.

WAHSATCH RENDEZVOUS
This unique format was another good one for the Titans. The meet was at the Cottonwood Complex in SLC and the course was 2.94 miles long. Both TEAMS ran very well in finishing 4th. This meet has a series of smaller races with all #7 runners competing against each other, then #6, etc. The places are then added up to get the final total. In the #7 races, Daylyn Johnston placed 5th (23:00) and Kyle Kelly 3rd (17:19). The #6 races had Abby Rich in 3rd (21:22) and Tyrell Pearce finishing 4th (17:14). Kiana Tebbs placed 5th (21:21) and Brandon Yardley 10th (17:36) in the #5 races. In #4, Shelby Cadwell was 4th (20:44) and Jaxon Hansen 5th (17:12). The #3 races had Mikelann Wilcox finishing 8th (21:20) and Preston Williams 7th (16:44). Austin Costley placed 2nd (16:00) and Taylee Hamblin 6th (20:29) in #2. In the #1 races, Hannah Williams placed 3rd (18:56) and Jake Rossmango 5th (16:05). When all races were combined, Hannah had the 3rd best time while Austin’s was 9th and Jake’s 10th.
Matt Clough and Weston Atkins ran very well in the JV race. Matt finished 2nd in 17:34. Weston was 15th in 17:57. Brandon Hansen (42nd, 18:40), Steve Wilcox (48th, 18:44) and Frank Owens (87th, 19:11) helped us finish 5th in the TEAM race. There were over 420 runners and 30 teams in the race. This was probably our best JV finish ever in a big meet.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Chosen as the Athletes of the Week were Taylee Hamblin, Jaxon Hansen and Matt Clough. Taylee had two very good races and showed that she can be a force on the State scene. Jaxon did a great job at both meets and is really starting to help the TEAM. Matt had his best race since coming to Utah and is working hard for a varsity spot.

THIS WEEK
We will go to Roy High for the “Open Region Meet” Wednesday. I’m not sure of the race times- they will start at 3:00 or 3:45. I’ll send out the race schedule as soon as Roy High sends it out. On Saturday, we will travel to UVU in Orem for the Orem Kiwanis Invitational. The bus will leave at 6:30 am with the races starting at 9:00.

XC Update - Sept 14

Titan XC Update - Sept 14, 2009

MURRAY INVITATIONAL
The Titans turned in some outstanding performances Friday at the Murray Invitational. With over 40 schools competing, Syracuse fared very well. The Girls finished 11th overall and 5th among the 5A schools. The Boys were 9th overall and 4th in the 5A classification.
Hannah Williams ran a great race to finish 7th overall and 2nd among the 5A runners. Her time of 19:33 over the 3.1 mile course was 53-seconds faster than she ran last year. She showed that she can run with the best in the state and will be one of the favorites for the 5A title in October. The other Lady Titan scorers were Taylee Hamblin (74th, 21:46, 1:33 faster than last year), Abby Rich (83rd, 21:57), Lindsey McFarland (86th, 21:59), and Kiana Tebbs (88th, 22:01, :49 faster than 2008). There were over 240 in the race.
Haley Busby (73rd, 24:44, 1:12 faster than last year) and Daylyn Johnston (75th, 24:45) were the top finishers in the JV race.
Austin Costley recovered from a bad start to finish 22nd in 16:54, just out of the medals. That is a 21-second improvement over last year. Preston Williams ran 17:34 to finish 50th. Jake Rossmango, battling the flu and the effects a record time in the PE mile earlier in the day, ran 17:40 to finish 60th. The other Titan scorers were Tyrell Pearce (92nd, 18:04, 1:06 faster than 2008), and Weston Atkins (97th, 18:10, 1:56 faster than last year). Over 260 finished the race.
Kyle Kelly was moved down to JV because he had been feeling under the weather. All he did was run 18:01, 1:11 faster than last year, to finish 6th in the JV race. Matt Clough, a newcomer to our program, ran very well running 18:44 to place 25th.
The meet was a good one to help prepare us for the big meets that really count. The experience gained will pay big dividends later in the season.
